Author's Note: Please read "Punishment" before this. This is more of a stream of conscienceness by Alex. Thanks to my beautiful, brilliant beta.

Alex leaned against the door. She couldn't shake the sensation she felt when her hand grazed Liz's hand on the doorknob. Alex shook her head and allowed her mind to wander. Liz Donnelly. Alex had a healthy respect for the older woman. After all, Liz had Alex's job for nearly ten years. Liz knew the challenges and emotional tolls it handed out each day. Yet, Liz did not let Alex fall into self-pity after a tough case. Instead, Liz encouraged Alex to accept that horrible things happen, and she willed Alex to move on. Liz's matter- of-fact tone had become almost comforting to Alex. Alex knew what to expect from the bureau chief: no nonsense, no bull. Liz shot from the hip, and Alex admired that.

Alex smiled and moved away from supporting the door. She went into the kitchen and poured a glass of Merlot. She twirled the wine in her glass and watched as the color lightened then deepened again as the wine settled. She made her way back to the sofa and sat down. Alex looked at the files that Liz had left for her. Alex shook her head. Why had Liz really come over? Alex had been working for the older woman for nearly six months, and not once had Liz been anything more than completely professional. True, Liz's visit tonight was on the pretense of being professional, but tonight, Alex saw a side of Liz Donnelly that she thought was buried too deep after all the years of working the system. Had Liz actually shown compassion? Could Liz feel compassion? Alex wondered. She felt a slight flutter in her stomach as she thought of Liz at her door, in her apartment, sitting in that chair beside the sofa. Alex wanted to know this woman better. She wanted to know the Liz Donnelly she thought she saw tonight.

Alex took a sip of her wine. She was intrigued, indeed. Intrigued on a professional level, but also, (and Alex blushed) on a more personal level. What was Liz Donnelly like away from the office? Does she date? Does she have a family? What does she do for fun? Does she even know how to have fun? Alex laughed at the idea. Most people at the office probably wondered the same about the young ADA! Alex just couldn't get Liz out of her mind.

Alex's thoughts suddenly skipped from musings about Liz's hobbies to Liz the woman. Alex took another (larger) sip of her wine. Should she allow her mind to go there? What the hell, Alex thought. She had already admitted to herself that Liz's cocky grin made her feel weak. She loved the way Liz would pause, raise her eyebrows, shoot that grin, then say something utterly biting. Straight to the core Liz would go with her stinging comments: "So, may I offer you a big congratulations on successfully setting civil liberties back two hundred years." Ouch! Alex had stood motionless in Liz's office as her punishment was handed down. Liz was definitely frustrated with Alex, but when wasn't she? Alex smiled. She enjoyed the on-going battle of wills in which she and Liz engaged. It was sexy.

THERE! She admitted it. She thought Liz, or definitely something about Liz, was sexy.

Alex drained her wine. She still had a long three weeks ahead of her, but the files (and new thoughts of Liz) would surely keep her busy.
