That smile. It was worth almost anything to see. She never saw it except in the mornings when she would wake Olivia up. She always woke first and was still vaguely surprised to see that once again Olivia had stayed for the night. Half asleep on her stomach, half on her side with a pillow under her head, her arm tossed above it, Casey would watch her sleep for a few minutes, amazed at the change in her face. Still beautiful but so relaxed, so different from the often grim visage she wore when they were discussing work. Then Casey would wake her, and the smile would cross her face, the smile that said I remember what I did with you last night, and any doubts she had about herself, her job or the world itself would lose themselves underneath it.
She decided she wanted to end it. Whatever it was, or had become. Three days of cold thought brought her to the decision. She paced through her office, as much as the small space allowed, and talked herself through her argument. They were co-workers. Even though everything was fine so far, some one, her first choices being Elliot Stabler and Arthur Branch, would have some sort of comments on it, and not likely positive ones. There was always the vague implication of conflict of interest. There was room for the accusation. But even as she paced, thought through the construct of why in her mind, she would flash on Olivias body next to her in her bed in the morning, the sly smile she was usually greeted with and almost changed her mind.
But thats all there was. A morning smile and then a hurried bagel with coffee before they went to their jobs. Sometimes they saw each other during the day but most days they didnt and yes, sometimes they had dinner but it was always just as some sort of foreplay, a way to tease each other before going back to her apartment, always her apartment. They rarely talked about anything. Casey found that she knew very little about Olivia and Olivia seemed unwilling to share anything of herself other than her body. And as wonderful as sharing that body was, she wanted more than that. What bothered her was that she didnt know how much more. And since she was so unsure, it seemed better to end it.
A steady knock on her door. Casey turned to see Olivia sticking her head through.
Hey, I got your message. You all right?
Yeah, Im fine come in, Casey replied.
I hoped you were done for the day. Thought we could go get something to eat, she said as she stepped into the office and closed the door behind her. She walked over and kissed Casey on the cheek.
Actually, I wanted to talk to you about something.
