The following is highlighted from the Democrat and Chronicle Newspaper:

February 15, 2005, "East Irondequoit teacher mourned Colleagues praise 'one-of-a-kind' educator and children's author."  Author and educator Karen Turkovitz had an abundant joy and enthusiasm for life that rubbed off on everyone she touched.
"She had an impact on every aspect of this school," said Joanne Zito, Principal of East Irondequoit's Ivan Green Primary School. "There is not one person here who was not touched by her.  Mrs. Turkovitz, of Irondequoit, died Sunday of an apparent heart attack. She was 46.
"She was like the Pied Piper in the classrooms and the school," said colleague Wendy Marasco, who with Mrs. Turkovitz and fellow teachers Linda Ryan, Karen Cunico and Anna Rivoli founded Five Degrees Press, the Greece-based company that published Mrs. Turkovitz's three children's books.
Mrs. Turkovitz began teaching at Ivan Green in 1998, after spending a short time in the Greece schools. She came to teaching after spending 17 years as a dental hygienist and earning a 1997 State University College at Brockport degree in psychology, with certification in elementary education.
While teaching during the day, Mrs. Turkovitz also found time to pursue writing.  She published three children's titles: What's So Special About Mitchell, on what it's like to be a student in a classroom that includes special-needs children, as well as Oh Frannie! and Not Again Frannie, the Adventures of Frannie Flotnik, both about the exploits of 12-year-old Frannie Flotnik, a character loosely styled on Mrs. Turkovitz when she was a child.
Karen Gurnett, President of the Ivan Green Parent Teacher Association, said Mrs. Turkovitz "always put the children first and made them feel like they were the most important thing in the world."
Mrs. Turkovitz is survived by her husband Phillip; three children, Ben, Hillary and Lauren ; parents Stanley and Barbara Kanover of Kingston, Ulster County; sister and brother-in-law Meryl and Robert Gondelman of Emerson, N.J; and nieces and nephews.
