Irma P. Hall Marlon Wayans J.K. Simmons Tzi Ma Ryan Hurst George Wallace Movie: A very funny, dark comedy. Professor Goldthwait Higginson Dorr, PhD (Tom Hanks) rents a room from an innocent, church-going old lady, Mrs. Munson (Irma Hall). The Professor, then assembles a gang that consists of 4 unique men; The General: the quiet chinese militant Garth Pancake: the demolition, handy-man Gawain MacSam: the potty mouth "black guy" Lump Hudson: the dumb "white boy" From the basement, the Professor and his gang plans out a casino heist, while convincing Mrs. Munson that they are just musicians using the basement for practice sessions. After the successful robbery, not only does Mrs. Munson finds out about there hiest, the gang falls apart in a series of double crossing, guilt and just plain not getting along. Like I said this movie was very funny in a dark way. The one thing that could have made this film better was the character's background. I enjoyed each and every character so much that I wanted to know more about them. Especially the Professor and The General, one that talked too much and the other that had only ONE line. 8/10 Video: The movie had an antique look to it including the details such as Mrs. Hall's furniture, the Professor's clothes and the background's setting (takes place somewhere in Mississippi). Widescreen 1.85:1 Color 9/10 Audio: The format is Dolby Digital 5.1 but there wasn't much use of the surround speakers. But, the gospel score was very good and went good with the heist scene. The lines were quite funny (Simmons, Hank) and Marlon Wayans was just plain annoying. Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Dolby Digital 5.1 - French Subtitled in English, French 8/10 Extras: Danny Ferrington: The Man Behind the Band The Slap Reel - Outtakes Gospel of The Ladykillers - Deleted Music Scenes DVD-Rom Features: The Ladykillers Script Scanner The Slap Reel is 90 seconds of Marlon Wayans getting slapped by Mrs. Hall. After watching this film and Scary Movie 1/2, he deserved it. 6/10 Overall: I really liked this film not only was it funny, it looked beautiful. The acting with the exception of Marlon Wayans was great. Well, I can't blame Marlon, it could have been the script, so if they were looking for an annoying black guy then Marlon Wayan is perfect but if they were just looking for a funny black guy then WRONG. I don't see why so many critics and "old" reviewers did not like this film. Maybe they just don't like dark comedy/humour (Duplex, Home Alone, The Burbs, The Cable Guy). So if you want a good laugh and/or you just want to see Tom Hank's fine acting, watch this movie. |
