| Fifthteen years has passed that Dances with Wolves won an astounding 7 Academy Awards. The film came out in 1990 and I saw it for the first time about 8 years ago. I can recall it being long and boring, and I fell asleep half way through the movie. After waking up, I asked myself; How can this film win all them Awards? and How did it make all this money? (Worldwide: $424,208,848) Eight years later, I saw the movie at Roger's Video in it's nice, fancy DVD packaging. So, I decided to rent the 2 disc Special Edition. And thank god I rented it.
Movie: I wasn't wrong about this movie being long. But if you have the patience, you will get so into this drama epic, that you wish it keeps going on. Dances with Wolves takes place in the Dakota territory during the Civil War, when the Americans was moving into the Western Frontier. The movie tells the tale of friendship, love, loyalty, self-awareness and prejudicism. The main character John Dunbar played by (bad actor)Kevin Costner be-friends with the Native American, the Sioux to be more speific while positioning himself at an isolated fort on the Western Frontier. Dunbar asked to be transfered there so he can see the west before the invading Americans get there and destroy the land and the wildlife to go along with it. The film shows a realistic view to the life of the Native Americans. How they lived almost in harmony(exceptions of invaders and other tribes) with their main concerns of food and shelter and no politics. After becoming friends with the Sioux, Dunbar adapts to their lifestyle and falls in love with one of the girls (Mary McDonnell) from the tribe. The film does a great job on the characters individually. Not only with Dunbar, but with individuals of the Sioux tribe. 10/10 Video: The movie was shown in the 16 x 9 Widescreen format. The bold colours of the plains looked wonderful and the articial sky looked convincing. The location of the film and the plains in general, showed me the peaceful Indian life back then. The costumes for both the Indians and the Union Army was also great. Overall, the film was captured beautifully. 9/10 Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 was the only audio option for this DVD. But it also included 2 commentaries shown below. The movie was mostly in english until Kevin Costner tries to speak the Sioux language. The Sioux spoke in there own native language which was subtitled (thank god). Overall, the dialogue and the sound effects was great. Commentary with Director of Photography Dean Semler and Editor Neil Travis Commentary with Kevin Costner and Producer Jim Wilson 9/10 Extras: The Original Making of Dances with Wolves Original Music Video: Music by John Barry The Creation of an Epic - A Retrospective Documentary 7-Part Documentary 1:21 Hours Dances Photo Montage Poster Gallery TV Spots Theatrical Trailer 10/10 Overall: After watching this movie, I can see why it won all them awards. The characters, the beautiful sceneries, and the story itslef is just magnificent. Another thing I liked about this film, just like the Vietnam War, it shows the moral integrity of the americans even back then. In conclussion, I would highly recommend this beautifully-made drama film. If you don't own this movie yet, then I advise you to purchase the Widescreen Special Edition, which is the one I was viewing. The movies continues on to the second disc with all the extras. Get this DVD now, you won't regret it. |
