Matt, is 18 yrs/old and a Freaking
wizard on Guitar !
In the thirty+ years that I have played music,It has been my privelige to share the stage with some of
the best musicians around...But it wasn't always so easy to just get up and join in.I had to do certain things in order to earn the  "Invites". Here  are some suggestions for any aspiring musicians,(and
especially HARP players) who may be having difficulty "breaking In"
ONE...Know how to play : sounds like a No Brainer,..It "ain't"
Do you know what a turnaround is? Do you know what a 12bar is?
how about a Shuffle or a Boogie?  Do you know when NOT to play ?
Do you know what really pisses off a band ?     I  DO !
If you could not answer these questions then stay home and learn.
If on the other hand ,you can play (either pretty good or DAMN good)
then getting on stage should'nt be that difficult.
TWO...Be Polite: get  to know the band that you want to "jam" with. It may take several trips to see them, but the more they see you, the  less threatening you are to them.Introduce yourself during a break (not while they're playing), DON'T  "play along"  from the audience ,and don't tell them how much better they would sound with a Harmonica in the band.Be polite, appreciative, and respect their efforts.
                                            ITS Their  GIG !
THREE...Up On Stage: now that you're up there YOU can SHINE !
WRONG !!!   Playing in a band or even just "Jamming" with a band is not always about you. Getting along, blending in,and being barely noticed are the hallmarks of Fine Harp player -vs-An overbearing asshole. You will get more leads and longer leads if you'll just "back off" .Be aware that all the members have a crucial part but together you're "MUSIC".  Always be aware of whos doing what, watch for cues, and nods, and other little signals and don't over play the others.if they take two leads then you should expect no more...don't play during someone elses lead, Use chops or little fills to enhance the song, not steal it. SHARE ! you'll get resepct and you'll get asked back.       Enjoy Yourself ...!
