Diet

Diet plays an important role in keeping your birds in good health. The parrots, in wild, are very fond of the fruits and seeds that they get from the fields. The captive birds are no less fond of these gifts of god and if properly fed, your birds stay away from most diseases.
The Seeds
The diet plan for my birds is simple seed mix, although many of our foreign friends do not approve of all seed mix diet but I adjust the ratio of each kind of seed according to the type and need of parrot and weather conditions are also an important aspect of change of seed ratio.
The seed mix includes sunflower seeds, canary seeds, millet, corn, rice, beans and other good seeds.
The seeds are very easily available in local Pakistani market and you can go to any shop or seed merchant for this purpose. The seeds should be of good quality and should be clean.
The ready made bird feed is also available in Pakistani market but un fortunately too expensive for local breeders to use. But as Pakistan is an agricultural country, we can get plenty of seed supply here.
The Fruits
Fruits are also very important for parrots but one thing should be kept in mind that the fruits should be very fresh and of best quality.
I also feed my birds with watery fruits like sugar-cane and watermelon.
The fruits should be fresh and should be wiped out of the cage after two ho
As summer season, in this part of Pakistan, is REALLY hot, I sometimes have to feed my birds with sugarcane and watermelon which really helps them to stay fresh and they really enjoy them.
The Green Vegetables
Green vegetables are also very important part of birds diet. Birds can get many nutrients and vitamins this way. Parrots suffering from Vitamin A deficiency usually lack green food in their diet so keep on feeding them some green vegetables.
Spinach, lettuce and other green leaved vegetables are excellent for your birds.
I give them all the vegetables that I think can be suitable for them like cucumber, tomatoes, chillies, egg plant or anything good.
Soaked chick peas are also greeted with joy by the birds.
Remember that whatever you feed your bird with, depends on the moods and response
Rosellas like Eucalyptus buds especially, so surprise them with these buds every now and then.
Health
Supply your birds with calcium and vitamins by giving them cuttle bone and doses of vitamins like Vita sol Super. To me, Vita sol Super has proven to be the best of them all.
Use plenty of Dettol to spray for prevention of germs.
In Winter season, I treat my birds with a mixture of breadcrumbs, boiled eggs and cod liver oil which keeps them warm and healthy.
Treating your birds for worms give you unexpectedly good results in your breeding program.
As for disease problems, I prefer homeopathic medicine over the usual antibiotics.
Although in some cases it is inevitable to fight the disease with homeopathy only. In that case, I consult my Veterinary Doctor "Dr. Rana Atta" who gives me real experienced advice which is always of a great help to me.
