In Pakistan, many local bird breeders use  traditional style of pots for birds to breed. These round bottom, clay made utensils or pots were and still are being used for this purpose. The size of the pot changes with the size of the parrot. I wont say, they don't work, 'cause I have seen birds like budgerigars, Rosella, Alexandrines, Cockatiels breeding in them without hesitation.

The problem with this style is that the young ones, in curiosity to see outside the pot, fall from the hole easily as the hole is not very far away from them and secondly, in winter season, the clay becomes too cold which results in death of young either after birth or before it.

But as the world is becoming a global village, we have easy access to internet and lots of information worldwide, which has given us the idea of using the wooden boxes for the breeding purpose. The size of wooden boxes vary for different sizes of birds too.

Here I have given the sizes that are being used in my farm and I don't find any problem with these sizes.

(All sizes are given in length x breadth x width)

Box Size = 8" x 8" x 8"

These boxes are used for all kinds of African love birds.

They don't have any ladder and don't have any window in them. I usually stick a small wooden stick near the hole so that the pair feels "at home".

Box Size = 7" x 8" x 6"

These boxes are used for Exhibition budgerigars or big size budgerigars which are called "King budgerigars" in Pakistan.

These boxes are used for Rosella, Indian Ringneck, Alexandrines and cockatiels with difference in size only but the basic structure remains same. On the inner side of the hole is a ladder to keep the parrot from falling or directing jumping on to the eggs or the young ones which usually end in a disastrous situation.

There is a window which helps to keep an eye on the eggs and on the young ones any time you want but don't forget to knock!!!

The size for different parrots are:

Parrot Type

Box Size

Alexandrines

24" x 10" x 10"

Indian Ringneck

18" x 10" x 10"

Rosella

18" x 10" x 10"

Cockatiels

10" x 10" x 10"
