Then, in 1940 actresses with long, red nails inspired the nail fashion to continue. They were fully covered with red polish and longer than usual, also more oval. Also in barbershops, men were offered manicures along with their haircut and shave. New colors of polish also started to come out for the women for about 75 cents a bottle. It was now that rouge (a creamy blush for the cheeks) and lipstick were tinted to match the polish. |

Red, Red, Red! The most common and most popular shade of nail polish was red! It gave a sexy, daring look and went well when paired with matching red lipstick, which was also popular at the time. |

The 1940s also brought new colors to the other red shades of nail polish. Following that in 1950, more colors started to go on the market. By this time the style was changing to keeping the nails pale and oval shaped instead of bold and sharply pointed. This is also when makeup was drawing attention to the eyes and not so much the nails. |

Then in 1957, Thomas Slack created a type of platform that helped manicurists put on extensions to the natural nail. It was made of foil and used around the edge of the nail, and helped apply the first acrylic nails, which would not become popular until 1970. |

In 1970 artificial nails were very popular. They would not stay on for long because they were held on by glue that was soluble in water, so they were used for primarily special occasions. Square tips were also getting more popular, and people were now going to the salon more often for their nails getting done than the more traditional barbershop. The artificial nail was also more daring in the sense that they were longer, and squared at the top. They looked and felt real but were also strong, which made them such a big success. |

Artificial nails during this time most likely looked like the above pictures. They were plain and simple to give a longer, cleaner effect. Now, arficitial nails come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. |
