QUANTUM CREEK --  Part Eleven

They found a place to sit not far from the snack trailer.  Sam wanted a private conversation with Rachael so he tried to find a picnic table that was not too close to the rest of the cast and crew that were also eating breakfast nearby.
"I wish we had a larger selection of food for breakfast, but we do what we can with what we are given," Sam said as they sat down.
"The first day I was here, someone on the crew told me that there was a catering service here for breakfast that served pancakes.  I was hoping to get some pancakes to start the day off right.  Every morning, I look.  I still can't find any pancakes anywhere," Rachael said.
Sam teased, "Pancakes, huh?  Just PLAIN pancakes?  Not made with blueberries or anything else?"
Rachael smiled, knowing Sam was teasing her.  "Yes, just PLAIN pancakes.  They're perfect with all-natural maple syrup from Vermont.  Absolutely to die for."
"But now you're braving the unknown with this...  stuff...  I eat for breakfast," Sam said with sarcasm.  He handed her an english muffin & cream cheese sandwich and Sam opened her bottle of apple cider for her.
Rachael nodded.  She understood his sarcasm.  She paused a moment, then she asked, "Do you want to know a little about me?"
Starting off the day in high gear, Sam thought.  He wondered if this was going to be too much information too soon.  On the other hand, Sam was curious.  "Shoot."
"All right.  Where to start?  I'm originally from Minnesota.  My mother's first name is Joanne," Rachael started.
"Hold on," Sam interrupted.  "Let's not make this sound like an audition or a job interview.  Just start off with your likes and dislikes."
"Well, I just told you I love pancakes.  I like the Packers, even though I should be a Minnesota Vikings fan.  I don't like roller-coasters.  I can't stand them.  I also don't think the letter K is cute," Rachael informed.
"Huh?  What's wrong with the letter K?"
"Everyone thinks replacing the letter C with the letter K at the beginning of words is cute.  The letter K is not cute.  Replacing C with K like that drives me crazy," Rachael clarified.
Sam smiled and joked, "Crazy spelled 'K-R-A-Z-Y', right?"
     Rachael smirked.  "Yeah.  Funny."
The two of them enjoyed the rest of breakfast together.  As the time ticked away, Sam and Rachael started feeling very comfortable together.  Sam could tell things were clicking between the two of them.
"I'm glad things are going  so well this week on the set," Rachael said after they had finished breakfast.  "I worry too much about things like that.  In fact, I worry all the time."
"Things are going to be fine," Sam said to her, suddenly remembering he had leaped in to save her.  "Don't worry about a thing."
"Easier said than done," Rachael replied.  She paused a moment and let out a sigh.  "Do you want to know a secret about me?"
"I thought you being a worry-wart was a big enough secret," Sam replied.
"No, that's not it," Rachael said, pausing again.  "Wouldn't you be at all interested in a secret about me?"
This surprised Sam.  Obviously, Rachael felt very comfortable with Sam as James Van Der Beek if she was going to tell him a REAL secret.  "Yeah, sure."
Rachael looked down at the table.  She suddenly seemed very shy.  With her voice only loud enough for Sam to hear, Rachael said, "I visited my grandparents in Florida one time when I was very young.  While I was there, I got a teddy bear."
Sam asked, "So what's the secret?"
Rachael replied, "I still carry him around to this day."
Sam thought that even though she was living the Hollywood lifestyle, it had not changed her.  At least, it had not changed her much yet.  He then realized how down-to-earth she really was.
Sounding vulnerable and still looking shy, she asked, "You don't think I am immature because of it, do you?"
"No," Sam said with a comforting smile.  "I was just thinking how something like that makes you seem so very down-to-earth."
Rachael's beautiful autumn-colored eyes lit up and a huge smile crossed her face.  "Thank you.  I appreciate that."  She looked down at her watch.  "I think we should go get ready for today's shoot, but before I forget, let me give you the number of the hotel that I am staying at.  Call me sometime before I go back to Hollywood.  There's a script called 'Texas Rangers' that my agent sent me.  You'd be perfect fro one of the roles in that movie.  Who knows?  Maybe they'll give you a million dollars to star in it!  Of course if you call, we don't have to talk business if you don't want to, but here's my number anyway."
Sam took the piece of paper that Rachael wrote her number on and put it in his jacket pocket as they both got up from the table.  As Sam and Rachael walked together to get ready for the day, Sam said, "And don't worry about your secret, Rachael.  I won't tell a soul."  Not even Al, Sam added in his own thoughts.

The first scene of the day was set outside the school.  It was scene nineteen, the beginning of Act Three, in which Dawson starts shooting his movie and Eddie Mills' character, Tyson Hicks, messes up the first take.  This scene took ninety minutes to shoot.  First, the director did not like the way Tyson's accident played out.  Then, it rained for twenty minutes.  Finally, there was a glitch in the main camera that needed to be repaired.

The second scene that was shot that Friday was scene A-twenty and it went a little smoother for everyone.  The scene was the one in which Kerr's character Jack tells Katie's character that he thinks "Oliver Stone" (Dawson) is not over her yet, but Joey convinces him otherwise.  After rehearsing the scene once, Kerr grabbed some of Katie's favorite snack, jelly bellies, from the bag on Katie's chair.  The prop department had transformed Katie's chair into the chair used by Rachael's character by taping the name "Sammy" on the back of it.  Luckily for Sam during breaks, he did not mistakenly sit in the chair marked "Sammy".
"People, let's get everything rolling smoothly for once," the director said.  It already had been a long day for the director.
Kerr started chewing the candy he had and delivered his lines.  Upon completion of the scene, the director told Kerr, "Hey, that was a very natural thing for you to start eating candy like that to start the scene.  I think we'll print that one."
Kerr asked, "Print that one?  Weren't we just rehearsing with the cameras in place?"
"Nope," David Semel said.  "That one's a keeper."
"Really?  Cool.  Well, at least things are rolling smoothly.  Anyone up for some more reggae music?"
