| AL -- Al Calavicci. Al is the OBSERVER in Project Quantum Leap. Al appears as a hologram to Dr. Beckett in the project's Imaging Chamber. Al is an admiral in the Armed Forces. Sam is the only one that can see and hear Al during a leap. Al uses a calculator device known as a hand-link to communicate with the computer running the project to get direct access to the computer. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| GOOSHIE -- He helps Al run the computer (Ziggy) while Al is in the Imaging Chamber. When Al is talking with Sam in the Imaging Chamber, Gooshie can hear what Al is saying and can follow any orders Al gives him. Gooshie is notorious for his bad breath. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| HAND-LINK -- This is a calculator-like device that is Al's direct connecton to the super computer (Ziggy). Al can read whatever information Ziggy is feeding it off the hand-link's display. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| IMAGING CHAMBER -- Since Al and Sam appear to each other as holograms, the chamber is the place where Al can observe Sam during a "leap". The project was built around Al's and Sam's brainwave patterns, so no one else can see Sam when Al is in the Imaging Chamber other than Al. The room itself is large and empty. It is colored an eerie blue, just like the Waiting Room. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| SAM -- Dr. Samuel Beckett. Sam holds six degrees and has been hailed as the next Einstein. Sam invented Quantum Leap as a process of time travel. During a "leap", Sam's aura occupies another person's body but Sam has no recollection of that person's memories. Sam is super-shy, intelligent and sensitive. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| WAITING ROOM -- Identical to the Imaging Chamber, except it has a bed and a table with a mirror on it. When Sam leaps into another person, that person's aura is kept inside Sam's body which is in the Waiting Room. To anyone else, this person looks and sounds just like Sam, including if that person were to look into a mirror, they would not see themselves, they would see Sam's face instead. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ZIGGY -- The super-computer running the project. Al named the computer Ziggy when they started the project. Although Ziggy is sometimes referred to as a "he", it was given a female voice and referred to as a "she" in later episodes of the series. The project itself is located in the New Mexico desert. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| THE OPENING NARRATION FOR THE SHOW THAT EXPLAINS MORE ABOUT QUANTUM LEAP Theorizing that one could time travel within his own lifetime, Doctor Samuel Beckett stepped into the quantum accelerator and vanished. He awoke in the past, facing mirror images that were not his own, and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better. His only guide on this journey is Al, an observer from his own time who appears in the form of a hologram that only Sam can see and hear. And so, Dr. Sam Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home. |
