Chapter 6.4 Marriage in Diverse Cultures

Monogamy: one man is married to one woman at a time
Polygamy: Plural marriage
Polygyny: a marriage where a man has more than one wife
Polyandry
: a marriage where a woman has more than one husband

- Polygamy is largely related to economic factors such as "property rights, access to resources and the sharing of daily work".

MONOGAMY
Mixtec Marriage:  an economic arrangement; believe that marriage is important

Indian Arranged Marriages (aka
endogamy) reflect: the Indian value of children deferring to parental authority, the belief that love can be created and social classes.

- *marriage before love, as opposed to love before marriage*

POLYGAMY
Read page 183 to 184 (note the views of different genders and different time periods)

Fraternal Polyandry
: a type of marriage in which two or more brothers jointly take one wife. 
Purpose: based on economics and to avoid conflict, limit population growth

Disadvantages: Unequal power distribution, sexual favouritism, jealousy, etc.

- "Double-marriage" in Nigeria
- Changes in marriage due to: political situation and technology.
