Maine: Tractor Related Plates
Maine undated Tractor issue. (circa 1957/58) Tractor plates have been issued since 1922 and have always have had the "Tractor" legend at the bottom of the plates. These are mostly used on farm tractors and bucket loaders and some construction vehicles. Plates were validated with passenger tabs of this era.

Maine 1969 Tractor issue (68 Base) Like passenger plates of this era, the tab slots remained on this plate although they were never used on these plates. The series, (like most all plates) were restarted after each base change.
Maine 1974 Tractor issue. After the 1968 base was retired the state began the black and white "74" issue. Again the numbering series was restarted but for the last time. No changes to plate therefore making this plate basically identical to the one above with the exception of the date and the scotchlike color.
Maine 1983 Tractor issue. After the inital changeover to the 74 base and the new registrations picked up (as you can see by the number that it has multiplied by 4 in 10 years) the state dumped the embossed 74 (like passengers) and centered the word "Maine".

Maine 1990 Tractor issue. Again like most series in 1987 the state changed to the lobster design plates. Again like previous plates, no changes have been made the plate except for the lobster design. being used. The numberingseries picked up where the other base had left off. All dies used are still the same. None had been changed to this point to my knowledge.
Maine undated Tractor issue (circa 1995/96) How about that! A change! The "tractor" die at the botton hasn't change any but the number dies have. This was done in 1993 when the standard die set was changed. The change occured appx at the 50-000 series.
