Maine: Antique Auto Related Plates
Maine 1979 Antique Auto issue. (74 Base) These plates first issued in 1974 replaced the yellow 68 base plates. The number of these plates being issued is on the rise now with more older vehicles being restored. The first issue of these plates in 1956 only contained a "Antique Auto" strip that covered over the "Vacationland".

Maine 1989 Antique Auto issue. Starting in 1987 the black and white plates were replaced by the lobster plate. The numering series picked up where the previous base left off. Still only 5000 had been issued since 1974 making it a rather tough plate to find.
Maine undated Antique Auto issue. (circa 1995) Starting around the 8000 series of plates the number dies were changed to the new narrow standard set. The number of plates by this time have doubled but still a difficult find.
Maine undated Antique Auto issue. (circa 1998) Somewhere between 10-086 and 11-131 (my other plate that I have) the die used for "Antique Auto" was modified making the word slightly larger. If you look at the back of the plate you can notice the "Q" is bigger and wider. Just a minor change but worthy to mention.
Maine 1988 Street Rod issue. Starting in the mid/late 1980's the state started the Street Rod series. Very few of these were issued as most people either chose vanity or antique plates instead of street rod. As you can see by the low number not many are floating around. The chickadee plates are only up to the 2400 series. Yet another hard find.
