Maine 1962 issue. These new plates were issued in 1962 to replace the '56 yellow plates. The slots (same on previous plate) were used for date tabs. Date tabs were used through 1967 on this plate although some '68 plates also contained tab slots (see next plate) The tabs were made from alumnium. These plates had something of a reflective bead coating and were very rough as you can see by this plate.
I'm still missing my 1963 plate so I'm jumping to 1964.
Maine 1964 issue. Nothing to spectacular about this plate. A dark blue tab was used for this year. The embossed "62" has been removed by this time as well. Nice looking plate anyhow.
Maine 1965 issue. Somewhere between the 429 and the 475 series the bead coating process was dumped for this new 3M scotchlite reflective sheeting process (still used today). It makes for a cleaner and overall nicer produced plate. This 3M scotchlite process has made for numerous and very attractive graphic license plates through the years.
Maine 1966 issue. Almost at the end of the life of this base plate. The '66' tab would be the next to last tab used.
Maine 1967 issue. This would turn out to the be the last plate to carry a date tab. The new yellow plates (1968 base) could carry some date tab slots but would never be used. The 1967 tab would be the only black tab used on all the plates in the tab era.
