"Did you begin
an investigation into the theft yourselves?"
Holmes interrupted.
"Why yes, of course we did. But sir, after months
and months with no lead, no real direction in which to head in, our agencies are
at a loss. And to put it frankly to you, most of our investigators are, shall we
say, not up to the task. Why many were stunned to learn that Puccini was not a
green vegetable--It doesn't look very promising, Mr. Holmes."
"No, I should
say not," concurred Holmes. "So then, Mr. Moore, what is it would you
ask of me?"
"Well, Mr.
Holmes, I should think that was obvious. We want you to track down the thief and
recover our culture."
Holmes broke out into
a repeat performance of his earlier hysteria, then suddenly transformed back
into the master pragmatist that was his nature.
GENERICA?
"Tour your nation with a more critical eye, sir, and you
will soon see that every city will resemble every other. Each one will have the
same shopping mall with the same shops, department stores and restaurants, food
parks and eateries. Everywhere you travel in America will feel like every other
part of the country. When in actuality the landscape should be diverse,
regional, making each city, and its banlieues, unique not generic, which
is what they have become."
