Taroko Gorge, Hualien County
Taroko Gorge

Taroko Gorge is the  premier tourist attraction in Taiwan.  The gorge is a  gaping  rift in the mountains, with shear cliffs rising up from the river bed.

The best way to enjoy this area is to get away from the crowds by exploring one of the many hiking trails in Taroko Gorge.  It is not very difficult to find yourself all alone on one of the trails that are available here.  Some of the more popular trails include the following:  Eternal Spring Shrine, Mysterious Valley,  Houran Pavilion, Baiyang, and Meiyuan (Plum Garden), and Lotus Lake.  For the more adventuresome, try one of the challenging mountain trails in this area such as the Jiangkou Mountain Trail or the Tali/Tatung Trail.

Note: Just make sure that you are careful when you drive through this area as you will be confronted with narrow cliff hanger roads, landslides, and bus loads of Japanese tourists.   Remember every car that goes into the Gorge, does not necessarily make it back out.
