Actually, Nantou, along with the East Coast, are the best two areas to get away from the smog and traffic of the big Taiwanese cities. Activities include mountain climbing, hot springs, hiking, camping, and even skiing, if the snow gods cooperate.
The main consideration before heading here is the weather. The scenery is stunning if the weather is clear, but the driving can be truly miserable if the clouds/rain/fog roll in, as is often the case up in the mountains...
