The Aga Khan: "I am amazed by the ignorance of Islam".

PARIS - He is one of the spiritual leaders of Islam who best knows the land and the people of Central Asia, the area which holds the world in suspense.  He is the Imam, the religious leader and guide of the Ishamilite, whose communities are spread in various countries of Asia and Africa, but also in Europe and in North America. Throughout Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and West China, there are more than five million Ishmaelite.

Text Box: His Highness, the Aga Khan, is the 49th direct descendant of Mohammad, through Ali, his cousin who married Fatima, the Prophet's daughter.

The leader is the 49th descendant of Mohammad, one of the principal spiritual leaders of Muslim Shi'ites:

The interview on the attack on terrorism: The Aga Khan: "I am amazed by the ignorance on Islam" and he continues: "This is not a conflict between civilisations but of reciprocal prejudices and stereotypes." .....

According to many scholars, it is the very absence of a spiritual authority which "excommunicates" radicalism which is the principal obstacle for the evolution of Islam. Do you agree? "The problem is wrongly posed and it does not concern the fundamentals of Islam. In fact, in the Shi'ite credence, one exalts the value of the intellect, of the spiritual guide, therefore of interpretation. But Western thought tends to confuse the bond between spirituality and secularism with a sort of compromise between State and Church. These are different levels, which involve the individual and the community in which one lives, not the political authority of the State. . The Koran prohibits judging the way in which another Muslim practices faith, but it also prohibits the enforcement of a religious practice or of a faith

"I think that monotheistic religions, having an analogous belief in an only God, should and must dialogue. The three religions which Abraham inspired have many more common facets than those which divide them. Religion must be a means by which to affirm the ethical significance of existence, irrelevant of one's faith. If we want social development, to meet halfway, to dialogue, peace, we cannot neglect ethics and the impact which education and culture have on social growth.

Aga Khan Speaks on Preventing
the Failure of Democracy
(Please see speech and related photos)

Guinea, Quebec, Canada, 19th May, 2004 - "Democracy can fail anywhere,
at any time, in any society …for it is self-evident, in Europe and
across the globe, that the existence of political parties and
elections do not alone produce stable governments or competent
leadership."

His Highness the Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary spiritual leader (Imam)
of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and founder of the Aga Khan Development
Network, today outlined the need to recognise both the fragility of
democracy as a form of governance as well as its virtues in advancing
human development.

"Leadership and Diversity" was the theme of the 2004 Governor
General's Canadian Leadership Conference at which the Aga Khan made
the keynote address to over 200 future leaders from across the country
in the presence of Canada's Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson.

[[H.H. Aga Khan's Address]28:37 min, 127MB]

Your Excellency the Governor General,
Excellencies,
Conference Participants,
Ladies and Gentlemen:

I thank Your Excellency for inviting me to share some thoughts in this closing session of the Leadership and Diversity Conference. On this occasion, I would also like to thank Your Excellency and the Government of Canada for the warm welcome and the kindness and courtesies that have been extended to me.

Three concepts seem to me to be essential in creating, stabilizing and strengthening democracy around the world, including among the people of Africa and Asia with whom I have worked in the past. These concepts are meritocracy, pluralism and civil society. In particular, I will ask, what role can Canada play, drawing upon her national genius, in creating or enhancing these great underpinnings of democracy in the developing world?

My interest in these themes of development and governance arises from my role as the hereditary spiritual leader—Imam—of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community.

Since succeeding to this office as the 49th Imam in 1957, I have been concerned with the development of the Ismailis and the broader societies in which they live. The engagement of the Imamat in development is guided by Islamic ethics, which bridge faith and society. It is on this premise that I established the Aga Khan Development Network.

Our long presence on the ground gives us an insight that confirms the UN’s detailed assessment in Latin America, which is that a democracy cannot function reasonably without two preconditions.

The first is a healthy, civil society. It is an essential bulwark that provides citizens with multiple channels through which to exercise effectively both their rights and duties of citizenship. Even at a very basic level, only a strong civil society can assure isolated rural populations, and the marginalized urban poor of a reasonable prospect of humane treatment, personal security, equity, the absence of discrimination, and access to opportunity.

The second precondition is pluralism. Pluralism means peoples of diverse backgrounds and interests, coming together in organizations of varying types and goals, for different kinds and forms of creative expression, which are valuable and deserving of support by government and society as a whole.

The rejection of pluralism is pervasive across the globe and plays a significant role in breeding destructive conflicts. Examples are scattered across the world’s map:

A secure pluralistic society requires communities that are educated and confident both in the identity and depth of their own traditions and in those of their neighbours. .....  Perhaps the greatest obstacle to pluralism and democracy, however, is the lacuna in the general education of the populations involved.

A dramatic illustration is the uninformed speculation about conflict between the Muslim world and others. The clash, if there is such a broad civilizational collision, is not of cultures but of ignorance

Humanities curricula in many educational institutions in the West, rarely feature great Muslim philosophers, scientists, astronomers and writers of the classical age of Islam, such as Avicenna, Farabi and al-Kindi, Nasir Khusraw and Tusi. This lack of knowledge and appreciation of the civilizations of the Muslim world is a major factor that colors media stereotypes, by concentrating on political hotspots in the Muslim world, and referring to organisations as terrorist and Islamic first, and only obliquely, if at all, to their national origins or political goals.

No wonder that the bogey of Islam as a monolith, irreconcilable to the values of the West or, worse, as a seedbed of violence, lurks behind its depiction as being both opposed to, and incapable of, pluralism. This image flies directly in the face of the respect that Islam’s cherished scripture confers upon believers in monotheistic traditions, calling upon Muslims to engage with them in the finest manner, and with wisdom. History is replete with illustrations where Muslims have entrusted their most treasured possessions, even members of their families, to the care of Christians. Muslim willingness to learn from Jewish erudition in medicine, statecraft and other realms of knowledge, is well exemplified by the place of honour accorded Jewish scholars at the court of the Fatimid Imam-Caliphs of Egypt.

Intellectual honesty and greater knowledge are essential if current explosive situations are to be understood as inherited conflicts and—rather than being specific to the Muslim world—driven by ethnic and demographic difference, economic inequity and unresolved political situations.

It is urgent that the West gain a better understanding of the Islamic world, which, as the Parliamentary report notes, is a hugely diverse collectivity of civilizations that has developed, and continues to evolve, in response to multiple societal influences—agricultural and rural, commercial and urban, scientific and philosophical, literary and political. Just like other great traditions, the Islamic world cannot be understood only by its faith, but as a total picture whose history is closely tied to that of the Judeo-Christian world.

The Ismaili Imamat strives to ensure that people live in countries where threat to democracy is minimal and seeks to draw on the experience of established democracies, which have a vibrant civil society, are sensitive to cultural difference and are effective in improving the quality of life of their citizenry. Canada is a prime example of such a country. It is for this reason that the Aga Khan Development Network is establishing, in Ottawa, what is to be known as The Global Centre for Pluralism.

Ladies and Gentlemen: There are compelling reasons, as I have tried to articulate, why Canada can and should take the lead in investing to safeguard and enhance pluralism. We inhabit an overcrowded planet with shrinking resources, yet we share a common destiny. A weakness or pain in one corner has the tendency, rather rapidly, to transmit itself across the globe. Instability is infectious!

But so is hope! It is for you - the leaders of today and tomorrow - to carry the torch of that hope and help to share the gift of pluralism.

Thank you.

Your Excellency the Governor General,
Excellencies,
Conference Participants,
Ladies and Gentlemen:'
allah, allah's revelations and the TAWHIID therein
question

why did his highness prince aga khan [sa] make the following CONNECTION between the faith of islam AND the islamic world - 'whose history is closely tied to that of the Judeo-Christian world?'

'Just like other great traditions, the Islamic world cannot be understood only by its faith, but as a  total picture whose history is closely tied to  that of the Judeo-Christian world.'

on the one hand, just prior to this period in human history, much of Europe or the then judeo-christian world was enshrouded in total darkness.

By His Highness Prince Sultan Mahomad Shah Aga Khan III

(Extract from The Memoirs of the Aga Khan by H.H. The Aga Khan III)

With the decline of the Roman Empire and the break-up of the great and elaborate system of civilization which Roman law and administration had sustained for so many centuries, the Dark Ages enfolded Europe. In the seventh century of the Christian era there was a rapid and brilliant new  flowering of humanity's capacity and desire for adventure and discovery in His Highness Aga Khan III during the Round Table Conferencethe realms of both spirit and intellect. That flowering began in Arabia; its origin and impetus were given to it by my Holy ancestor, the Prophet Mohammed, and we know it by the name of Islam. From Arabia the tide of its influence flowed swiftly and strongly to North Africa and thence to Spain.

lbn-Rushd, the great Muslim philosopher, known to Europe as Averroes, established clearly the great distinction between two kinds of apprehensible human experience : on the one hand, our experience of nature as we recognize it through our senses, whence comes our capacity to measure and to count (and with that capacity all that it brought in the way of new events and new explanations); and on the other hand, our immediate and imminent experience of something more real, less dependent on thought or on the processes of the mind, but directly given to us, which I believe to be religious experience. Naturally, since our brain is material, and its processes and all the consequences of its processes are material, the moment that we put either thought or spiritual experience into words, this material basis of the brain must give a material presentation to even the highest, most transcendent spiritual experience. But men can study objectively the direct and subjective experiences of those who have had spiritual enlightenment without material intervention.

and on the other hand, when a non-muslim speaks about the faith of islam in general, he usually thinks of it in terms of either the practice of the sunni muslim majority and/or  that of the iranian shia muslim majority practice per se.

it is not that the said generalization or identification of either islamic practice may be erroneous to begin with - but that in and of itself is limiting the 'ESSENCE' of the revealed or scriptural faith of islam per se, whose historical reality goes well beyond the last 1400 plus years of islam.

allow me to explain.

  1. from the biblical perspective or the judeo-christian traditional viewpoint only, the holy institution of 'IMAMATE' -- 'KAHEN' -- 'HIGH PRIESTHOOD' - began with MELCHIZEDEK;
  2. who was the priest of the most high god - elyon el [gen: 14:18-22, psalms 110 and hebrews 7:1-3 -- al-aliyyun -- [hq 17:71,72 42:51-53].
  3. and then we have the aaronic priesthood which was divinely instituted with the prophetic mission of moses.
  4. to this, the holy qur'an added the imamate of hzt. imam and nabiy--prophet abraham and his seed [pbuth] - hq: 2:124; 19:41.

in other words, these scriptural facts directly translated into the said history of the religions under discussion.

whereas, the history of the islamic world and that of the judeo-christian world is closely linked not only through their scriptures, religions or religious practices but also through the PRESENCE of His Highness the Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary spiritual leader (Imam) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims among us today.

the holy imamate of the shia ISMAILI imams [pbuth] then, is the common denominator between the 3 abrahamaic faiths and their respective history.

It is said that al Fatihah is the quintessence of the Quran, and bismillahir rahmanir rahim is the essence of al Fatihah, and the letter ba of bismillah is the embodiment of bismillahir rahmanir rahim, and the dot below the first letter ba of bismillah is the spirit of the first verse.

Ali, son of Abu Talib, the first of the holy Imams, had said:  "I am the dot below the ba of bismillah"

Word Origin: Hebrew,  Noun Masculine, Strong #: 2243

Elijah = "my God is Jehovah"
  1. a prophet born at Thisbe, the unflinching champion of the theocracy in the reigns of the idolatrous kings Ahab and Ahaziah. He was taken up to heaven without dying, whence the Jews expected he would return just before the advent of the Messiah, whom he would prepare the minds of the Israelites to receive.
Footnotes
28 Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?: Jesus cries out in the words of Psalm 22:2, a psalm of lament that is the Old Testament passage most frequently drawn upon in this narrative. In Mark the verse is cited entirely in Aramaic, which Matthew partially retains but changes the invocation of God to the Hebrew Eli, possibly because that is more easily related to the statement of the following verse about Jesus' calling for Elijah.

29 Elijah: see the note on Matthew 3:4. This prophet, taken up into heaven (2 Kings 2:11), was believed to come to   the help of those in distress, but the evidences of that belief are all later than the gospels.

it is reported by abu ishaq thalabi that abdullah bin salam asked the holy prophet to give the name of the man who had knowledge of the book and brought the queen of sheba with her throne within the twinkling of an eye.

the holy prophet said: "IT WAS ALI."

it is stated in minhaj al sadiqin and umdat al bayan -- [SUNNI HADITH] -- that then the holy prophet said to ALI:

"O ALI, thou had been HIDDEN -- [BATIN, navali] -- WITH ALL THE PROPHETS of allah preceding me, AND WITH ME THOU ARE    MANIFEST - [ZAHIR, navali] - [M.S. U.B.] [#vr. 40. [1699], s.v. mir ahmed ALI, pp. 1157].

NADI ALI, WHICH THE HOLY PROPHET RECITED

        [Pooya/Ali Commentary 27:20]

it is reported by abu ishaq thalabi that abdullah bin salam asked the holy prophet to give the name of the man who had knowledge of the book and brought the queen of sheba with her throne within the twinkling of an eye.

the holy prophet said: "IT WAS ALI."

it is stated in minhaj al sadiqin and umdat al bayan -- [SUNNI HADITH]-- that then the holy prophet said to ALI:

"O ALI, YOU HELPED ALL THE PROPHETS of allah incognito -- [BATIN, navali] -- (concealed from view), and YOU HELP ME   in propria persona - [ZAHIR, navali] - (in person) MANIFESTLY.

Ali ibn abi Talib is known as mazhar al aja-ib and mazhar al ghara-ib because, as willed by Allah, he used to appear in different forms to carry out divine plans under very special circumstances. These two epithets are exclusively reserved for Ali. Even today the true believers invoke Allah to send him for help (???*navali).

the Famous Dua, Known as Nadi Ali, Which The Holy Prophet Recited, As Commanded By Allah, At Khaybar Refers To Ali As Mazhar Al Aja-Ib. Ali Ibn Abi Talib Is Also Known As Mushkil Kusha, The Remover Of Hardships.

In every age, to many persons he comes personally to remove hardships. Through his name great spiritual achievements are attained. The Holy Prophet, and after him, Ali are acknowledged as the most superior possessors of the spiritual powers.

this then in essence, WAS AND IS THE DIVINE, UNIVERSAL, ever living and the eternal MESSAGE AND GUIDANCE OF 'ISLAM.'

this was ALSO the very message and guidance of, my beloved holy imam - spiritual leader, his highness prince aga khan [sas] may 19, 2004 not only to canada but also to the world at large.

The name of David is expressly mentioned in connection with the Zabur in iv. 163 and xvii. 55, although there the indefinite article is applied to the word as meaning a Book of Scripture. See Psalms xxv. 13, "his seed shall inherit the earth"; xxxvii. 11, "the meek shall inherit the earth" (quoted by Jesus in Matt. v.3); and xxxvii. 29, "the righteous shall inherit the land."
C2760. The same promise occurs in the Pentateuch, Exod. xxxii. 13.

THE HOLY Ginans & Granths -- [religious hymns composed by our holy pirs] -- LITERATURE & TRADITION IN THE ISMAILI TARIQAH is similar to Zabur: the Book of the Psalms of David

[004:163] We have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Noah and the Messengers after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.

[017:055] And it is your Lord that knoweth best all beings that are in the heavens and on earth: We did bestow on some prophets more (and other) gifts than on others: and We gave to David the Psalms.

in my previous articles, we have seen many such biblical traditions, examples and prophecies whose fulfillment have been found in the true islam, as revealed to the holy prophet muhammad [sas].

in short, not only do they make up the 3 branches of the abrahamaic faith but also ISLAM [a monotheistic faith & submission to god], was there long before either judaism or christianity came into existence.

it must be noted, too that the true islamic-monotheistic faith of 'el-elyon'  -- was already flourishing then. and the real object of this revelation -- was to continue this holy faith in that seed for all times to come, as seen from that first point of the divine contact.

003.065 O People of the Scripture! Text Box: 4
Why will ye argue about Abraham, when the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed till after him? Have ye then no sense? 003.067 Abraham was not a Jew, nor yet a Christian; but he was an upright man who had surrendered -- haaniifam muslimaa, and he was not of the idolaters.

allow me to explain this from another perspective as well.

THE 10TH KALKI AVATAR -- AAYAT-- REVELATION -- MANIFESTATION OF VISHNU

what does the above mean in our daily lives? well, for one, islam is a way of life and two, it is put into practice daily by one and all, regardless of his caste or creed.

for example in a court of law:

Text Box:   "Although I am unborn and My transcendental body never deteriorates, and although I am the Lord of all living entities, I still appear in every millennium in My original transcendental form. Whenever there is decline in religious practice, O descendent of Bharata, and a predominant rise in irreligion- at that time I descend Myself. To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium." (Bhagavad Gita, Book IV, Sutra 6, 7,8)             when a hindu swears on the bhagavad gita or by VISHNU  [most high god], RAM OR KRISHNA [7th and 8th REVELATIONS OF VISHNU;

            he is swearing by the same EL-ELYON - [most high  god] that a jew/ israelite and/or a christian swears by on his torah/bible;

he also swears by the same AL-ALIYYUN, ALIYYAN OR ALIYYUL -- allah  [most high god] -- that a muslim swears by  on his qur'an.

          he also swears by ALIYYUN AMEERUL MOMIINEEN ALIY-ULLAH - [an ayat --revelation & imam--the holy and divine priest] - [ali [the most high] -- the master of the believers is from allah, the most high] --  that a shia imami ismaili muslim swears by;

because according to our shia imami ismaili tariqah -- path or tradition of islam -- he is the prophesied 10th KALKI AVATAR OR REVELATION of VISHNU  or the HEAVENLY RIDER ON THE WHITE HORSE.

feel free to review my recent scripture based article viz., YA ALI MADAD on this matter.

Matsya; the Fish, is the first manifestation of Vishnu in the course of the Deluge: He saved humanity's forebears from the flood.  While Brahma was falling asleep, at the end of the Kalpa, the asura Hayagriva wanted to take advantage of the circumstances to steal from him the Vedas. But Vishnu caught the asura in the act, and to retreive the Vedas, took the form of a fish. Then Vishnu-Matsya taught the rishi (sage) Satyavrata to collect herbs, seeds and animals, to ghather toghether the seven rishis, and to wait. At the Pralaya's beginning the gigantic fish defeated the asura, restored the Vedas to Brahma;  . Matsya; RamaKrishna ; KalakI
