YA ALI MADAD

His Highness the Aga Khan's Speech at the Opening Session of ‘WORD OF GOD, Art of Man: THE QUR'AN and its Creative Expressions’  His Highness the Aga Khan The Ismaili Centre, London October 19, 2003

This programme is also an opportunity for achieving insights into how the discourse of the Qur’an-e-Sharif, rich in parable and allegory, metaphor and symbol, has been an inexhaustible well-spring of inspiration, lending itself to a wide spectrum of interpretations. This freedom of interpretation is a generosity which the Qur'an confers upon all believers, uniting them in the conviction that All-Merciful Allah will forgive them if they err in their sincere attempts to understand His word. Happily, as a result, the Holy Book continues to guide and illuminate the thought and conduct of Muslims belonging to different communities of interpretation and spiritual affiliation, from century to century, in diverse cultural environments. The Noble Qur’an extends its principle of pluralism also to adherents of other faiths. It affirms that each has a direction and path to which they turn so that all should strive for good works, in the belief that, wheresoever they may be, Allah will bring them together.

Does not THE QUR’AN challenge the artist, as much as the mystic, toHis Highness the Aga Khan October 19, 2003 IIS Speech go BEYOND the physical - the outward - so as to seek to UNVEIL THAT which lies at the centre but gives life to the periphery? Is not a great work of art, like the ecstasy of the mystic, a gesture of the spirit, a stirring of THE SOUL that comes from the attempt to experience a glimpse of, and an INTIMACY with, THAT WHICH IS INEFFABLE AND BEYOND BEING?

The famous verse of ‘light’ in the Qur’an, the Ayat al-Nur, whose first line is rendered here in the mural behind me, inspires among Muslims a reflection on the sacred, the transcendent. It hints at a cosmos full of signs and symbols that evoke the perfection of Allah's creation and mercy.

later in karachi

7.     later that afternoon mowla returned for another visit to the hospital.

8.     after mowla had finished his visit he walked up to his car.

just as he was approaching his car  – a few jamati members waiting outside for his didar noticed that there was a sudden flash of bright light from above, on a warm sunny day.

navroz:  [the similitude of his light[2] is as a .... light[3] upon light[4].

           mowla then looked towards the sky,

            [2:144. indeed we see the turning of your face to heaven]

           raised his hands

           and laughed loudly and happily.

           he then turned towards the jamat;

           blessed them with the same ‘noorani hands’;

           which he had just ‘raised towards that bright light’ above.

 my mom and both sisters were part of this 'blessed' group of the jamat that was graced with mowla’s DOUBLE ‘zahir wa batin’ NOORANI didar, simultaneously.

THE 'UNIVERSAL - PERFECT' MAN'S DIVINE ORIGIN  -- 'Ĥanīfāan --  man by nature upright'

Fa'aqim Wajhaka Lilddīni Ĥanīfāan Fiţrata Allāhi Allatī Faţara An-Nāsa `Alayhā Lā Tabdīla Likhalqi Allāhi Dhālika Ad-Dīnu Al-Qayyimu Wa Lakinna 'Akthara An-Nāsi Lā Ya`lamūna (30:30).

So set thy FACE (O Muhammad) for religion as a man by nature upright - the nature of Allah, in which He hath ORIGINATED MAN. There is no altering Allah's creation. That is the right religion- RELIGION OF QAIM - but most men know not.

Fa'aqim Wajhaka Lilddīni Al-Qayyimi Min Qabli 'An Ya'tiya Yawmun Lā Maradda Lahu Mina Allāhi Yawma'idhin Yaşşadda`ūna (30:43).

So set thy FACE resolutely for the right religion--RELIGION OF QAIM, before the inevitable day cometh from Allah. On that day mankind will be sundered-

Message of Thaqalayn

Ahl-al-Bayt (`a): Its Meaning and Origin

Translated by M. Jalali
Vol. 2, Nos. 2 & 3

"When Almighty Allah created Adam, the father of mankind, and breathed His spirit into him, Adam looked to the right hand side of the empyrean.

There he saw five figures in the form of silhouettes engaged in prostration and genuflection.

He asked: "God, have you created any one from the dust before me?

God replied: "No."

Adam said, "So who are these five figures which I see resembling my own shape and form?"

God answered, "These are five of your offspring. If it were not for them, I would have not created you. They are five people whose names are derived from My Own.

If it were not for them, I would have not created paradise or hell, the heavens and the earth, the skies and the lands, the angels, the human beings and the jinn.

I am "Mahmud" and this Muhammad.
I am "Aala" and this is `Ali.
I am "Fatir" and this is Fatimah,
I am "Ihsan" and this is Hasan.
I am "Muhsin" and this is Husayn.

 By My Glory, whoever bears even an atom's weight of grudge against them will be cast into hell. O Adam! They are My chosen ones. For them, I will save or cast others to perdition. If you want anything from me, you should resort to these five people."
