In the year 2341 the alien race Berg invaded the empire and the SSD was called into action. The old Apocalypse Class missiles devistated the Berg expeditionary fleet as they tried to cross the Great Asteroid Belt and forced their retreat by repositioning the Morian orbital defense platforms in the path of the Berg fleet. The platforms took a severe beating but survived until the bulk of the Kel-Morian fleet arrived. The stations were so badly damaged that they were abandoned and decomissioned however one was taken back into Morian orbit as a Berg War memorial.
After the war the SSD adopted the motto "Defensor Fortis" which is Earth Latin for Stedfast Defender. The SSD now has over three hundred orbital defense platforms around all the major planets and around the 16 corridors through the Great Asteroid Belt. Along with this they control all the strategic assets to the Kel-Morian Empire including their own fleet of Strategic Missile Assault Ships equipped with 24 Ares Class ship launched ICBMs and several Star Crusher Strategic Assault Space Platforms.
