Most places charges about $50 labor plus about $30 parts for installing an after-market radio.  Why pay $80 when you can get away with just the minimal of $30 for parts?  In this section, I hope to give you a pretty good over-view of what is needed to properly install a car radio.

There are two things you need to buy besides the radio:

  1. Buy a wire-harness
  2. Buy a installation kit

Also, you may need some of the following tools:

  1. Phillips Head screw driver
  2. Flat Head screw driver
  3. Utility Knife
  4. Wire Stripper
  5. Soldering Iron (optional)
  6. Wire Crimper (If soldering iron is not available)
  7. Electrical Tape
  8. Butt Connectors or Wire Connectors

The wire-harness you purchase must be a harness for the vehicle you plan to install the radio in.  What the wire-harness does is allow you to easily connect the factory radio's plug to the after-market radio's plug.

The other required part, the installation kit, allows you to install almost any model radio into the existing space in your car.  The installation kit fills any possible gaps that may result from replacing a factory radio with an after-market.  Also, an installation kit makes the mounting and installation of the radio much simpler.  Don't be fooled, even the professional installers use installation kits, it's added to the cost of the parts.
