Who Is This Boy
And What Have You Done With Travis?
Hi everyone!
Travis is out of the hospital again! We're about cha-cha'd out right
now from all the back and forth. But we hear this is just part of the BMT
bargain. And likely more hospital stays after this. One day at a time...
one day at a time... one day at a ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzsdlk;ajdflkjtrf
Oops! Anyway, today Travis had one of those steroids-possessed moments
(though it lasted longer than moments). He was SCREAMING at Joe and me (didn't
want his dressing changed on his central line site -- we do this every 3
days) and kicking us and hitting us. Hell, I'd have done so long before
this... but he's been storing up for awhile I guess. Joe and I were trying
so hard not to laugh, because it really ISN'T his nature at all, to be so
angry and mean! And of course, that just made it worse. Oh well, creative
distraction helped after awhile. And yes, we did get the dressing change
done ("AREN'T YOU DONE YET, STUPID???"). As parents, we do know
that this isn't intentional disrespect, so we let it slide!
The rest of the day went smoothly-- Travis was even was running around
a few times, happy go lucky. Tomorrow to clinic again. His counts are fairly
low, but holding... WBC 1.5, Hgb 9.something, Platelets 36. His creatinine
was high at 1.3 and now is .6 (still a bit high). Hopefully things will
start back up again now that the stress of fever and high blood pressure
is gone (we hope). Plus the mega steroids are helping if it is GVHD. The
best news was that the Bone Marrow Aspiration showed 99.8% donor cells.
And no flare up of CMV (cytomegalovirus, or something -- a virus which he
had in his system before BMT -- many do -- and can cause serious complications
if it becomes active after BMT).
Travis got a pass out of the hospital yesterday for a few hours to trick
or treat. His cowboy costume was perfect -- his bandanna was right over
his mouth and nose to shield him! Travis and Spencer (Batman) had a GREAT
time as we visited about 8 houses in a neighborhood that graciously invited
RMH families to join their neighborhood association trick or treat festival.
What a WONDERFUL good deed that was, as we had nowhere else to go (the town
of Wauwatosa was buttoned up for the night, as they'd had trick/'treat the
night before Halloween--go figure-- and the hospital had celebrated on Thursday).
There we were, all dressed up with nowhere to go, and then remembered our
invite. It was truly delightful for our whole family. We just kept shielding
Travis away from everyone, and he had a blast. Most importantly, Joe and
I are now enjoying their spoils, of course!
Me, I'm having a --yes -- HISSY few days. So don't come within miles
of me. The four walls are closing in... I am happy to have us all together
-- just feeling the stress a bit more each day. BREATHE........ Breathe...........
Love from us,
Melanie (Hisser), Joe (Hissee), Travis and Spencer |
