Chinese rock
KING…model of a new
generation,
his music simply
speaks up his mind,
his thoughts and his
vision of LIFE. True
feelings, deep
meanings, beautiful
concepts can be
found in his movie
clips (“Candle
Light”),
read in his lyrics (“Without
Me”)
and felt in the
rhythm (“Not
a Rule”).
He was already into
music at the age of
15…even if he is
nowadays busy
filming, music
remains number one
for him. It is his
best way to express
himself.
Nic’s not a
common artist.
Something special
hits you when you
hear him singing.
It’s like he was in
a middle
area…between Chinese
pop (which is
different from
American pop) and
ROCK.
The heaviest he
gets, the heaviest
my heart pops up.
Modest, honest, Nic
is not easy to
understand. He is
like a book that
never ends, full of
passion and new
discoveries. Maybe
this power, this
strong sense comes
from his ability of
dealing with his
emotions. This is
what I personally
admire in him. Nic
is not the type of
person who would get
a depression that
easily. So often
criticized by the HK
Medias, so often put
in the wrong
category, he still
succeeds in ignoring
them, proving them
wrong, knowing he is
RIGHT, knowing that
one must be strong
enough to achieve an
aim, he is convinced
that one must NEVER
GIVE UP…and THIS is
shown in his music
(ex:
“The Brave Song”).
Although he
sometimes seems to
be in a stuck
condition, as the
people around him
ask for typical hit
songs, pop songs
(like when he makes
songs for other
people), Nic still
speaks his mind and
doesn’t care about
what people think of
him. It depends on
what he wants to
achieve.
As long as it
moves the heart then
the music is good.
His influence can be
HUGE. His kindness
is a precious thing,
no wonder he has so
many friends,
including of course
in the HK
entertainment (
Eason
Chan, Edison Chen,
Stephen Fung
etc etc
etc). Nic is
open-minded, he is
friendly, and he
likes to collaborate
with different
culture people in
order to produce a
new style of music,
a new genre never
done before. The
best album that
shows this team work
is definitely
Released
(2005) (description
of different human
relationships),
where Nic worked
with talented
artists such as
Wu Bai
or Mayday.
Still
my favourite
collaboration song
is “Today’s Your
Birthday”, where the
guitar background is
simply one of the
strongest of all Nic’s songs. As a
Japan lover (he
studied music
there…and I think
Japan can offer more
to Nic than China
because of the more
opened music
strategies), Ting
Fung worked on this
song with his close
friend
Sugizo
(famous Japanese
guitarist). It can
be found in
Jade Butterfly
(Track 3 - Today Is
Ur Birthday),
my favourite Nic’s
album as it is the
one that reflects
him the best, where
his vocal structure
is so powerful.
So many people are
important in Nic’s
music background,
like
Carl Wong, Veegay, Eric Kwok,
Joseph Hwang
etc….
Eric Kwok
is definitely the
one I admire the
most, he composed
“Wolf”
and I LOVE this one
so much, I feel Nic
is so much powerful
in it, even
aggressive…everyone
has a wolf inside
and it can burst
when time of
injustice comes.
Still Nic is not
stuck in Asian
music, on the
contrary, he likes
the American Metal
band
Metallica
(it
gives an idea about
what music taste
Ting Fung has and
what kind of spirit
he can adopt), not
to mention that he
considers
Steve Vai
and other great
western guitarists
as his IDOLS: yes,
Tse Ting Fung loves
GUITARS.
Up till now,
Nicholas Tse has
something like 80
guitars, a huge
collection by a rock
star who never
claimed himself as a
guitarist. His
skills need some
improvement, but his
playing is decent,
as he showed them
during his greatest
concert ever, the
Viva Live concert
(CD/VCD/DVD released
2001), doing solo
after solo and
setting the crowd in
uproar. Such
excitement, such
madness and passion
in his attitude on
stage, Ting Fung
made already an
enormous
achievement.
His best guitar
solos are found in
“Viva”,
“Velvet Dragon”
or
“Impatient”.
This passion and
excitement can be
shown with Nic’s
slow songs as well.
I never heard any
other strong and
beautiful VOCAL as
Nic’s one. He gets
high like he gets
low; it’s always
perfect and it makes
the listener shiver
(“Dian
Ge”, “I Have to
Leave”, “Life after
Love”, “Play which
looked like Angel”).
With his great
talent of musician,
Nicholas Tse is
definitely RISING.
All of his albums
(with different
concepts and ideas,
Cantonese or
Mandarin, Nic is
rarely repetitive)
made his fans admire
him even more…and
