Glencar Inn Cup Final Donegal Town 0 v 0 Keadue Rovers (3-2 on pens)
It was Donegal Town who eventually came out on top in an enthralling Glencar Inn Cup Final on Sunday evening. In glorious conditions in Fanad it took penalties to separate the two sides. Donegal Town were keen to avenge the two league defeats to Keadue and almost started in great style when they had a wonderful chance to take the lead on just 8 minutes. A cross from the right by Amanda Jane Harris found Angeline Wilson unmarked in the box but her touch let her down and Alison Duggan got down to save well. Keadue responded well though and following a fine move down the wing on 15 minutes a Sinead Walsh cross found its way to Roisin Greene but her shot from distance was well saved. With Mairead Gallagher and Deirdre Dillon in inspired form at the back for Donegal and Carley Sweeney and Patricia Doherty keeping things in check at the back for Keadue both sides were finding chances hard to come by. On 32 minutes a powerful run from Aoife McDermott saw her break into the Donegal box but just as she was about to shoot she was knocked off the ball and Donegal cleared the danger.
In the second half Keadue stepped it up a gear and started to find a few gaps in the Donegal Town defence but Mairead Gallagher was immense and made quite a number of brilliant tackles just as a goal seemed on the cards. Donegal Town had a great chance to open the scoring on 65 minutes following a mix up in the Keadue defence but just as Wilson was about to stick the ball in the net Duggan got down brilliantly to save on the line. On 70 minutes Keadue should have taken the lead when Lorraine Sweeney went on a brilliant solo run which took her clean through on goal. With just the keeper to beat she looked certain to score but Gallagher got back to make a brilliant saving tackle. With just 5 minutes remaining both sides could have won it. The first chance was for Keadue when Lorraine Sweeney hit a brilliant shot from just outside the box. It was well saved by McGinty in the Donegal goal and her quick ball up the field put Wilson through on goal but Carley Sweeney got back to block her shot.
In extra time the chances were few and far between as tiredness set in and it was no surprise that the match went to penalties. Donegal went first and Mairead Gallagher found the corner of the net giving Duggan no chance. Roisin Greene went first for Keadue and she found the net with ease. Next up for Donegal was Rena Brogan but she saw her effort well saved by Duggan. Siobhan Burke stepped up for Keadue but her effort went over the bar. Angleine Wilson stepped up to hit Donegals third and she made no mistake with a great finish. Deirdre Walsh was next up for Keadue and she found the net with ease. Emma Doherty was next up for Donegal but she saw her effort go wide. Lorraine Sweeney had the chance to put Keadue ahead but McGinty saved well. Last up for Donegal was Amanda Jane Harris and she stayed cool to find the net. Marion Doherty had to score to keep Keadue in it but she put her effort over.
In what was a very even match there were a number of impressive performers on both sides. Mairead Gallagher, Deirdre Dillon and Angeline Wilson were exceptional for Donegal Town with Carley Sweeney, Patricia Doherty and Lorraine Sweeney in brilliant form for Keadue.
