April 14, 2002. Well, it's definitely April. We have had more rain in the past couple of weeks than we had snow over the past few months! I guess there is the whole good side of it, flowers blooming and grass growing. That's all fine and good, but we don't have any flowers planted and we haven't gotten around to buying a lawn mower yet! We had planned on buying a mower and a hedge trimmer the other day, but it keeps raining so what's the point if we can't use them?! We do, however, plan on being good homeowners and buying an old fashioned style hand mower. Actually, our main reason for that is the fact that, within the next year or two, we won't have much grass to mow. The backyard will have none at all (Japanese-style garden) and the front will only have a bit of grass after we build a new front walk and some planters. As for the rest of the house, things are progressing, albeit at a very slow pace. Another coat of polyurethane went on the library floor and now we have to sand it one last time and put one final coat on. Then comes the decision of whether we move the boxes of books up there right away or if we paint the walls first. I'm thinking it would be easier to paint first, but then again, we need to think about getting the bedrooms done as well. I do know that my office is at the very bottom of the list of priorities...I can live with it being all white for awhile. Kylan got an addition for his basement bar...his first real piece of furniture. Friends of ours were getting rid of a sofa but didn't want to throw it out so we told them we would take it. It's nice and solid, pine construction with dark blue cushions. The hard part was getting it into the basement. It would have been fine if our side door lined up with the basement stairs but, of course, it doesn't. Trying to figure out the angle at which to get the sofa downstairs was a hell of a job. We had to remove the sofa's legs, take off the handrail on the stairs, and spend more than half an hour maneuvering the thing before we got it down there! I can tell you one thing, we are never bringing it back up those stairs. In other doings, we went to a concert last Tuesday night. We drove up to the Odeon in Cleveland. (It's a concert hall in the Flats district.) The band? Well, it was rubyhorse of course! Yep, it's the third time we have seen them in just over six months. We can't help it, they are the greatest band that has come around for a long time. We were there early and heard part of the sound check. Then Dave (the lead singer) came down from the stage to chat with us. Of course, we got the usual hug and kiss hello (well, Kylan didn't get a kiss). We chatted about their upcoming album ("Rise" is being released in the US on May 21st) and I got Dave to sign a couple of photos that we took at the last concert. He gave us some cool rubyhorse stickers as well. And the performance was amazing...they get better everytime we see them. They have a great stage presence and lots of energy, even when there are only a few people in the crowd to see them (they were the opening act). And their album just may be released in Canada soon as well...the rubyhorse website lists a radio station in Niagara Falls, Ontario as playing their single "Sparkle". And now for the piece de resistance. On Saturday we bought a car. Not just any car, mind you...we bought a BMW! A little much, you say? Well, actually it's an older model (from 1988) and Kylan's office manager was selling it. She gave us an amazing deal on it, especially considering she had replaced the brakes and muffler this past year and had the transmission overhauled. And no, we didn't suddenly find spare cash somewhere (especially since the tax man took a chunk of it). We took out a short-term loan at the credit union. We have decided to drive the car for the summer and worry about getting repairs done on the truck closer to fall. Yes, photos have already been taken and will be posted as soon as they get developed. That's all for now, D. |
