| 5. ELIAS HOUGHTON (5) son of Edward (4) and Olive (Russel) Houghton, born at Killingly Conn., Oct 9, 1774; Married--------Sarah Gilbert, at Whitingham, Vt. Their only Child was: 1. JAMES, born at Whitingham, Vt., Oct 16, 1798 HISTORY: Elias Houghton (5) went from Thompson (originally a part of Killingly, Conn.) to Whitingham, Vt., where he married Sarah Gilbert, whose family had come to Whitingham form some town in Massachusetts, near Thompson, Conn. He removed from Whitingham to Bennington, Vt. probably in 1799, but certainly as early as caused by exposure and over-exertion while harvesting his crops during a very rainy season. He was buried at Bennington, Vt. His widow with her son James returned to her friends in Whitingham, and later married David Cutting of South Whitingham. She died there Aug. 21, 1844, and was buried in the cemetary at South Whitingham. 6. JAMES HOUGHTON (6) son of Elise and Sarah (Gilbert) Houghton, born at Whitingham, Vt., Oct 16, 1798; married at Preston, N.Y., Sept. 25, 1820, Sarah Smith, born at Woodbridge, Conn., Dec. 30, 1796. Their children, all born at Whitingham, Vt., were: 1. DAVID, born Oct 9, 1821; married at Wilmington, Vt., May 5, 1847, Sophronia P. Putnam of Whitingham, Vermont 2. LEMUEL, born Jan. 6, 1863; married (1) Miranda C. Purnam of Whitingham, Oct 11, 1848, She died at Adams N.Y., Jan 25, 1856, and he married (2) at Chicopee, Mass., Dec. 15, 1859, Hattie Cowles of Chicopee. He died at Springfield, Mass., Feb. 11, 1902, aged 79, and was buried in Hope Cemetary in Worcester. 3. SARAH JANE, born May 29, 1825; married at Wilmington, Vt., May 5, 1847, Chandler P Putnam of Whitingham, Vt. 4. JAMES SEYMOUR, born June 9, 1827; married at Whitingham, Aug 8, 1852, Philanda Briggs of Springfield, Mass., Jan 23, 1890. 5. MARY , born Feb. 11, 1831; married May7, 1862, Ansel B. Worden of Heath, Mass.,; died at Springfield, Mass., Jan 23, 1890. 6. LEWIS LESTER, born July 22, 1836; unmarried; died at Whitingham, Feb 17, 1864 HISTORY: James Houghton (6) lived in Whitingham, Vt, all his life, expect for a few years during his boyhood. Most of his adult life was spent upon the farm in South Whitingham, later occupied by his son James S. Houghton. He died there June 6, 1868. His wife, Sarah, died Nov. 18, 1882. Both were buried in the cemetery at South Whitingham, Vermont. 7. DAVID HOUGHTON (7) born Oct.9, 1821, Whitingham, Windham, Vermont. married Sophronia Parker PUTNAM, May 5,1847.
