| According to tradition, Ralph was the son of Sir Richard Hoghton , of Hoghton Towers, Lancashire, who was crested Baronet by King JamesI, May 22, 1611. Ralph fought under Cromwell against King Charles I, not withstanding the fact that he had been previously knighted by the King for services to his person; and finally had to flee to America, on account of his political opinions. He landed in Charlestown sometime previous to 1647, and in that year was, with nine other, living in Lancaster, Mass., where he was first Town Clerk, one of six prudential managers, Representstive to the General Court in 1673 and 1689, and held various other offices His farm in Lancester included the ground now occupied by the Brick Church and Public Buliking at Lancester Center When Lancaster was destroyed by the Indians in 1675-6, he removed to Woburn, and later to Dorchester. In 1682, He settled at Milton, Mass., and Joined the Church ther with his wife on June 18, of that year He returned to Lancaster in 1685, remaining until 1689 or 1690, when he returned to Milton and settled at "Scotch Woods, nigh unto Brush Hill". He died there April 16, 1705 (See Report of Houghton Association 1869, by Columbus Smith) FIRST GENERATION IN AMERICA . I. RALPH HOUGHTON, born in Lancashire , England in 1623; married Jane STOWE. who was born in 1626. Their children, born at Lancaster, Mass., were: 1. JAMES, born in 1651; married (Mary Sawyer b:14 April ,1653); died in 1711. 2. MARY, born Dec. 4, 1653; married Jan. 20, 1675 Wm. Bentlett. 3. JOHN, born April 28, 1655; died Oct. 10, 1679 4. JOSEPH, born july 6, 1657; Married (1) Jane Vose; and (2) Dec. 8, 1708, Margaret Reding, died at Milton, Mass., March 22, 1737. 5. EXPERIENCE, born Oct. 1, 1659; married May 22, 1684, Ezra Clap, of Dorchester. 6. SARAH, born Feb. 17, 1662; married_________Sawyer. 7. ABIGAIL, born July 15, 1664; married John Hudson. 8. HANNAH, born Oct. 16, 1667; died in Dorchester, Oct 8. 1679. 9. RALPH, born about 1663 or 1665; married Mary______, born 1664. He was a mariner and lost his life in the great earthquake at Jamaica, June 7, 1692 RALPH HOUGHTON died at Milton, Mass., April 15, 1705. His wife Jane died at Miltonn Mass., Jan 10, 1700/1701.
