Picks of the Day Page 2
Best of 2002 (Continued)
The Bourne Identity- So this one has it all, a spy who forgets his identity, an attractive woman who falls for him, exciting locales, action, romance, intrigue... Anyways one of my favorite spy movies AND well directed, unlike its sequel...
Comedian- So you wanna go into standup? Think again. This documentary goes from Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld to Bill Cosby and even some unknown hack. It's funny at times, but most of the time very poignant as everyone thinks standup comedy is sooooo easy.
Gangs of New York- The ultra-violent epic about how the Irish were flocking to NY in the 1860s. Daniel Day-Lewis gives an outstanding performance as Bill the Butcher. And try as they might DeCaprio and Diaz can't ruin this one from film great Martin Scorsese. Excellent direction and real special effects make this one an Oscar worthy movie in 2002, even though it was nominated for tons of awards, it didn't win one single Oscar. AND it didn't even make its money back. Wow, just wow.
The Ring- Before you die, you see... Yup this one has all the elements of a good horror movie, a mysterious tape, a scary kid killing people, a reporter trying to find out the truth. This one will stay with you for DAYS afterwards, if only due to the video they show in it. Hardly any blood or violence, but still the freaky feeling, makes this one a hit in 2002. Will the sequel in 2005 be as good? We'll see...
Roger Dodger- This is my kinda movie. And from a first time writer/director. A man living in NYC, who thinks he knows all about women and how to score, finds his teenage nephew has come to visit him. In doing so he asks his uncle to teach him all he knows about women. Terrific writing and acting make this one a keeper. My pick for 2002, check it out and you won't be disappointed.
The Rules of Attraction- Another of my picks. This one though, is very tough to watch without an open mind. You will either love it or hate it. Book by Brett Easton Ellis (of American Psycho fame). All about a small college in the 1980s, although it could be set in the present. This movie follows three main characters as they fall into and out of love. Also there is a ton of sex, violence, nudity and swearing, so again you will love it or hate it. It is supposed to have many comedic moments, albeit black comedic moments. Another pick of 2002. Not for the faint of heart. You will know in 15 minutes if you will like or hate this movie.
Talk to Her (or Hable Con Ella)- This is mostly a sad love story about two women who fall into comas and the men that love them. The Spanish setting and language give this movie just the right amount of emotion and style. It shows what love can be all about.
Signs- Ok, I know, an M. Night Shyamalyan movie. I loved this and the Sixth Sense. Unbreakable was just ok and The Village I thought was not scary at all. Mel Gibson heads up this one as aliens try to contact, and then invade Earth. Spooky, but not overtly scary.
City of God- This one is a sad, but true, epic about the crime that goes on in Rio de Janeiro. Over two hours of kids killing each other to survive. And how, when and if those kids grow up, things all turn out. Sad but gripping tale of survival at all costs. Another pick of mine if you can sit through all the violence for two hours.
