Picks of the Day Page 3
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind- Would've thought that this movie about Chuck Barris would've been so entertaining. A game show host and (maybe) a highly skilled assassin. Sam Rockwell makes this movie as George Clooney and Julia Roberts also do their best.
Punch Drunk Love- Adam Sandler's first attempt at actually acting goes over pretty well. There is a little comedy, but overall a love story about a guy who is pushed around and who finally stands up for himself, and his new love. Very different and unique, even for a Sandler movie.
Best of 2003 From Here On!!!
Best of '02 Cont.
Confidence- All about Ed Burns being a con artist and scamming Dustin Hoffman out of his money. Very good caper movie that has a ton of cool characters. The ending is well done too.
Identity- Ok so the ending is ruined a little earlier than it should have been, but for most of this movie you are wondering who the killer is and what all the characters have in common with one another. John Cusack is great in this, as well as Amanda Peet.
Dirty Pretty Things- Audrey Tautou makes another hit as a woman who's looking to survive, and her friend Okwe who works all odd jobs just to stay in London. Some things develop and basically some unpalatable characters get added into the mix. Great acting make this a great one.
Irreversible- This French movie makes me gag during a few parts, but basically told backwards about a rape in France and what the woman's lovers do about it. Very difficult to watch, just like Man Bites Dog or I Spit on Your Grave, but still a solid movie for 2003.
Lost in Translation- Here's a romantic movie about two Americans sad in their relationships, who find each other in Japan and fall in love. Bill Murray makes this movie, while Scarlett just wanders about. I didn't love this movie, but it showed something not seen too often in movies these days: heart.
Monster- This one story about a prostitute who fights to survive and who falls in love won Charlize an Oscar and rightly so. Very difficult to watch, but even more so because it is based on a real woman.
The Missing- Tommy Lee Jones makes this movie, as an American who turns Indian who goes out to find his granddaughter. I didn't think this movie would be that good, but the setting with the acting made for a very entertaining little film.
Something's Gotta Give- Nicholson and Keaton are perfect together as the guy who is afraid of getting old and so dates younger women and the woman who isn't looking for love, but finds it. Geared more for the 40 and 50 year olds, but also says something about attraction and love at any age.
Swimming Pool- This French story about a writer who takes a vacation in her boss' house only to find his daughter, who has some pretty bad habits, comes to visit is a mystery, even to me now. The ending is a head-scratcher, but entertaining as well.
The Cooler- Story about a man in Vegas who is so unlucky that a casino hires him to spread his unluckiness around, until he falls in love and it all starts falling apart. Or does it?
Thirteen- About two 13 year old girls caught up in drugs and sex in California. Think "Kids" with less sex and nudity and more character development. Holly Hunter is good in this one.
21 Grams- The weight of a soul? Very sad non-linear story about love, loss and death after an accident. Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro shine in this movie.
