Introduction

This WebQuest was developed by an interdisciplinary group of secondary education majors at Bradley University as part of an assignment for ETE 371, Methods of Secondary Teaching. The group included Mathematics major, a Family and Consumer sciences major, an English major, and two Social Sciences majors.

This project invites a group of five 11th grade students to complete an exploratory survey of the Alaskan wilderness. The WebQuest is set in 1868 and the group has been appointed by the President of the United States to determine the feasibility of buying Alaska, much as Lewis and Clark were asked to explore the Louisiana Territory by President Jefferson. Working together, the group must research and present a report to the United States Congress and make a recommendation, based on their findings, to purchase or not purchase Alaska. The recommendation should be presented in the form of a written report and PowerPoint presentation. The students should research the history, geography, natural resources, and culture of the native population, using credible Internet websites as their primary source of information.
