Soap
Crayons
A Fun project for everyone..great way to get clean too!
1 c Soap flakes
food colouring
2 tb hot water
Have one large bowl and several small bowls, one for each color. You
also need an ice cube tray with different sections, or containers to act
as small molds.
Put soap flakes in a large bowl and drop the hot water into the
soap flakes, stirring constantly. The mix will be very thick and hard
to stir. Spoon some of the soap into each bowl and color each
separately, adding the color by drops until the soap has the
consistency of a very thick paste.
Press spoonfuls of the soap into your molds and set the crayons in a
dry place to harden. They should take a few days to a week to
dry completely. When dry, remove from the molds and allow to dry for a
few more days before using.
Magnets
Lids from small jars like babyfood or frozen
juice
Construction paper
Decorating materials (eg. glitter, magazine cutouts,
photos)
Crayons or markers
Glue
Small flat magnets (available at craft shops or the
craft sections of drug and general merchandise
stores)
Pick a jar lid and trace it on construction
paper. Cut
out the construction paper circle and push it inside
the lid (you can put a little glue inside first if you
want). Now decorate the construction paper. Glue a
magnet on the backside of the lid. Stick it on the
refrigerator.
Magnet
Note Holder
clothespins
fun foam in various colors
glue
magnetic tape purchased at Walmart or other discount store
Here is a simple craft. It will be a refrigerator magnet to hold notes.
Cut flower shapes from the fun foam and glue at the top of the
clothespin. Cut stem, leaves from fun foam and glue beneath the
flower. Put the magnetic tape on back. Very quick and easy.
Photo
Puzzle
A photo of your child, color copied & blown to any size desired
(or any photo will do if it's at least a 5x7)
glue
cardboard the size of the photo
laminate paper
sharp scissors (for mom or dad helping)
Glue the photo to the cardboard
Laminate it, trimming edges around to make it smooth/even
Cut the photo in different shape cutouts (large pieces for
smaller children)
The puzzle is ready for your child to assemble!
Salt
Dough Sculptures
Salt
dough recipe
poster paints
laquer
With your child, mold dough into various figues, animals, etc.
To save & treasure his/her sculpture bake it at 150 degrees for
2-3 hours or let sit out for 24-48 hrs til solid. It can then be painted
& laquered to save.
My
Book
an inexpensive brag book or small size photo album
thin cardboard from cereal boxes or posterboard
small photos of the family
cutout pictures from magazines
scissors
glue
laminate
tape
Cut out pictures from magizines that your child would enjoy- toys, boats,
children playing or find all pictures related to a theme.
Use a photo on the front of the bragbook with cutouts involved
& print with the marker the title on a piece of white paper and
glue it on the front of the book.
Put laminate over it to protect the cover.
Make pages out of the cardboard by cutting it into several
pieces just a little smaller than the pockets in the bragbook.
Print the text on each page you just made at the top or bottom
of each page.
Use short sentences related to your photos
or cutouts or your theme.
Ex.'s Page 1 "Ben can ride a tricycle"
Page 2 "Mom is so proud of Ben"
Page 3 "Dad likes to bounce ben on his knee"
Page 4 ...Well you get the picture by now.
Next glue down the pictures to fit the text on each page.
Slide the pages into each clear pocket in the book.
Place a piece of tape lengthwise at the edges of the pages to
seal the pages in the pocket so your child can't easily remove
the pages. Your child will enjoy this special book about him/her!
optional;
you can also use decopage glue such as Modgepodge to
create the cover for more durability. Let dry 24 hrs before creating
the book if using this method. It's more "professional" looking too if
you don't mind the wait.
Round
Collage
plastic plate
glue
collage suggestions (you can use all or just a few);
stones
buttons
small sticks
dry noodles or beans
string or yarn
ribbon cut in small lengths
wildflowers
scraps of bright cloth
various puzzle pieces
broken up egg shells dyed with food coloring
there are endless possiblities!
Spread glue generously on the paper plate & let your child place
the objects on top of the glue. Let dry.
Fit
to a T
A t-shirt in your child's size
fabric paints in 2-3 colors
newspaper
wax paper
cardboard the size of a shirt box
First place a piece of the cardboard inside the t-shirt to keep colors
from
seeping through.
Next, spread out the newspaper on the table or floor
Lay out the shirt on the newspaper.
Squirt some of each color paint onto a sheet of wax paper,
spread each paint gob out about a 6 inch diameter.
Have your child place his hand on top of the paint evenly
(you may need to assist a younger child) and place their painted
hand down flat on the t-shirt at various places on the shirt while
re-painting their hand each time. Do 2-3 prints of each
color depending on the size of the shirt front.
When done, set shirt aside carefully with cardboard inside.
Let dry 24 hrs before child wears it and 48 hrs before you wash it.
Wash in warm water and dry on low heat or hang to dry each time.
* a special treat would be to make a shirt for yourself also, with
your childs handprints. you could write on the shirt using a
fabric painting pen putting your childs name & age.
Lifesize
Me!
Newspaper end roll of blank paper
(this is newsprint paper you can purchase VERY inexpensively
from your local newspaper office. It comes in huge rolls. Also very
handy to use for drawing paper, fingerpainting etc.)
fat marker (the wide type)
Roll out alot of the paper, longer than your child is tall
Cut (make sure you ahve more than enough paper)
Have him/her lie down on the paper & trace around his/her entire body.
*This takes a few minutes so is not appropriate for a toddler unless
you have a very patient child!
Trim the excess off the drawing and hang on his/her wall.
