severalstyrofoam
plates that meats/produce come on
paints
Cut out shapes from styrofoam with child (be creative with shapes
designs etc). Place on a plate & microwave for a minute or til it "shrinks".
Shrinky dinks can then be painted and you can add magnets to the
backs to hang on the fridge as well.
Lava
Lamp
A clean plastic 16 or 20 oz bottle with cap.
( water bottles work well.)
Food coloring
Cooking oil
White glue
Funnel
Optional extras: Glitter, beads, small
plastic or metal trinkets.
Directions:
Fill bottle half way with water. Add 2-3 drops of food coloring.
Screw on cap and shake to mix coloring. Do not make water
too dark. You will not see the trinkets you add.
Remove cap and put in any optional extras mentioned above.
Use funnel and carefully fill the rest of the bottle with
cooking oil, leaving a little space at the top.
Put glue around sides of the inside of the bottle cap and
screw into place. Once cap is securely in place gently turn
upside down a couple of times for a lava lamp effect. Turning
or shaking the bottle in different ways will give you different
effects. Have fun, experiment and see how many different
looks you can get.
How
Does Your Garden Grow?
a large plastic container such as an unusable childs
swimming pool
or smaller if you like such as a plastic sand bucket or plastic dishpan
* Make sure there are holes placed in the bottom for drainage.
seeds (vegetable or flowers or both!)
potting soil
water
With your child, fill the container with soil. Have fun with the dirt,
this is the
best part for them!
Create small holes in the soil and drop seeds in according to
the directions on spacing (the seed package will have the directions
on it). Cover the seeds back up after each planting.
Moisten the soil and water alittle each day. Remember they need
sunshine to grow so keep them outside on the deck or patio where
they can drink up the water and sunbathe!
*this activity/craft should be done along with talking to your child
about plants, growth and the needed ingredients to grow etc.
Lace
it up
old cards like Christmas cards
thick yarn
a hole punch
Cut the fronts off of a few old cards.
Use a hole punch to punch several holes around the outside edges
of the card fronts.
Your child can use strips of yarn to lace in and out of the holes.
Tie a small knot at the end of the yarn after the first couple of
laces so it won't slip back out the holes. At the end when your child
is done, tie a knot to secure it.
Butterfly Suncatchers
plastic 2 liter bottles clean & dry
glitter glue
string
Cut the shape of a butterfly ( the size of your hand) out of plastic 2
Liter
pop bottles. Decorate with glitter glue and add a string to the top. The
plastic
keeps its rounded shape and makes lovely suncatchers!!
Box
House
refridgerator box (usually
free from local appliance store)
scrap cloth
masking tape
poster paints
rope or strong cord
This is a great toddler playhouse! Cut out windows and doors,
hang curtains
(staple material on the outside) paint pretend furniture inside,
add rope for
door handles, etc. This simple box, hand in hand with hours of fun,
encourages imaginative play.
