Accidentals
Sharps and Flats are part of a large group called accidentals.  They're not really accidents, though.  They're actually written into music on purpose.  Like I explained before, to make a note sharp, play the key directly to the right of the white key.  To make a note flat, play the key directly to the left of the white key.  So on the piano accidentals would look something like this . . .
Sharps
Flats
And if you looked at a piece of music with, for example, G sharp in it, you would see . . .
Or if it was G flat you would see . . .
But in some cases, accidentals do not have to be used.  This happens when there is a key signature present . . .
