Leadership Group. create innovation has formed linkages with a number of the foremost Australian companies with a strong sustainability mission. The companies invited include: Steve Paul & Partners (hydraulic and environmental engineers), Arup Engineering (international engineering consultancy), EDAW Gillespies (international master planning consultancy), Interface Carpets (international manufacturing company), Cathedral Stone (artisan stonemasons), Moncasa Housing (steel fabricators), Arthur Andronas (heritage architects), Urbis JHD (social planners and master planning), ERA (agriculture technology), Williams Boag Architects (Sustainable buildings), Quantum Energy (equipment suppliers) and Eco2sys (Environmental consultants). This export group is currently developing the business planning and market testing in conjunction with international management consultants HLB Mann Judd, with funding support from the Victorian Government’s Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development.

Collaboration toward a vision. Each project has its own unique potentials and challenges. create innovation is founded on a spirit of collaboration and learning. The collaborative view feeds off inspiration and emerging knowledge.

Examples of the social innovations include:

  • micro-financing to support owners; supporting of local employment through entrepreneurship; integration of arts and crafts into the supply chain

  • appropriate technology that produces long-term employment

  • and NRI graduates returning home for work experience, service and empowerment.

Environmental initiatives include drawing on latest advances such as:

  • heat-pump solar hot water systems without panels

  • charities that facilitate cleaning up and avoiding pollution

  • consultants working on the Green GDP and measurement of outcomes

  • the latest research in embodied energy and embodied water

Financially projects can benefit from:

  • moving from upfront minimum costs to looking at the lifecycle benefits from sustainable development

  • identifying project areas that benefit project bottom line through concessions, reputation and media

  • identification of national, international, and UN funding or investment organisations

These institutes include: the Rocky Mountain Institute, the Biomimicry Guild and in the Design Centre for Appropriate Technology in the USA; and in Australia, Williams Boag Research, Deakin University and the Built Environment Research Group. The knowledge available through these organizations represents a significant resource pool for practical application in development projects. create innovation is bringing this resource applied within development projects will facilitate India’s global leadership.

Action Steps. In February/ March 2006, as a first step towards securing sustainable development projects, create innovation is visiting India. This visit is to consolidate linkages and identify opportunities with selected Indian architectural and design firms in Bangalore, Baroda, Chennai, and Delhi. create innovation is scheduled to meet with key leaders of the Indian Government, and the State Governments of Madya Pradesh and Karnakata. Existing relationships with the Indian Institute of Architects, the Confederation of Indian Industry, and a number of key charitable and non-profit organizations will also be further developed. In April 2006, the business planning process in Australia will be finalized. In May 2006 create innovation will visit the USA, Canada, EU, UAE to develop sustainability resource links, and then return to India. This visit will move project opportunities forward, develop project briefs and suitable project partners from the Global resource pool.
