| The magic system in Final Fantasy VIII is totally different from that in FF7. Firstly there are no magic shops in FF8 basically normal people can't use magic but Garden students are specially trained so can. There is no materia in FF8 and instead of the AP levels required to learn new magic, you instead have a command, draw which allows you to steal magic from the enemy. This command will be on your battle screen and if you select it you will be presented with two choices cast of stock. If you choose cast then the magic is drawn from the enemy and immediatly cast back on it. If you choose stock then the magic is drawn from the enemy and saved for use either later in that battle or in a different battle. Which ever one you choose if there is more than one enemy you first have to choose which enemy to draw from. Then if they have more than one type of magic you have to choose which type of magic you wish to draw. The magic is the stocked or cast depending on your choice. There are also no magic points in FF8 but when you run out of a certain type of magic you have to go and draw some more. This could be done in battle as decribed above or you could draw some more from one of the various draw points thoughout the game. Through the draw system it is easy to get the more common magic such as fire. But the more powerful magic is generally only avalible from bosses and other dangerous monsters. The junction system is not all that complicated, basically every thim execept attack is done through the Guardian Forces. This means that if you have no GFs junctioned then your only command in battle is attack. When you junction a GF then you also have to junction the abilities or you will still end up with just the attack command. Basically if you just think of the abilites like the materia FF7 then you shouldn't find it too hard to get to grips with. When junctioned properly each GF should give the commands, Attack, Draw, Item and GF. You can junction most of the Guardian Forces, the exceptions being Odin and Phoenix. All of the ones you can junction will have abilities, commands and junction abilities. There are different kinds of abilities like junction, character, party, Guardian, command and refine abilities. |
