Card Battle
Characters
Storyline
In Final Fantasy VII there were a huge range of sub-games. In FFVIII, these have been replaced with the card battle. The way it works is that each player chooses five of their cards and then takes turns to place them one at a time, on a 3x3 grid. Each card has four numbers - one on each side. When you place a card next to another, the touching sides are compared and if your card is the highest then you take control of both of the cards. Normally you can only take control of one card per turn. If however, the sums of each are 10, or if all values are ties then you can take more turns. Play ends when all nine squares are filled, then the player with the most cards win.

To play the game you have to be in a city or garden area of the game and you need to press square button instead of the circle button. This will only work if a person has cards to battle with. As well as getting cards from card battles, you can also pick them up after monster encounters. There is also a Guardian Force which will transform monsters into cards as well as one which will transform cards into items, many of which are unique or could give access to weapon upgrades.
