Kate and Ben's house in the Gambia
Navigation
Here we are outside our front gate.  As you can see, security is good.  We have a living room, 2 other rooms, a western style and spacious bathroom with shower, and an outdoor kitchen.  Due to malaria, we have taken to cooking in one of the spare rooms, even though it does not have water.
As you can see, the inside is painted bright sea-green!  Kate's friend in the Peace Corps in Mali claims this makes the room feel cooler when its 140F - even though it hasn't been thjs hot (yet!), it does seem to help somehow.  But matching home furnishings sure is tricky!
Our apartment is one of 6 in the compound.  We're 1 back from the road, so its a bit quieter.  Our night watchman and "superintendent" lives in the shack with the white door at the  back.  2 other VSOs live here, and 2 real Gambian families, plus a pharmacist out front.
It may be hard to see, but that's Kate demonstrating how our Mosquito (or Mosy) nets work.  This is our second line of defense against catching malaria.  They fold up during the day, but one quickly gets used to them.  They're soaked in repellant, but we haven't noticed.  So far, keeping the mosies out, which is the important thing!
Here's the front gate to our compound.  As you can see, the colors here in the Gambia are quite brilliant!  And due to the heat, our clothes dry on the line in no time!
The red car belongs to our neighbor and marks our gate, alas the sattelite dish is not ours!
Here is the local prison - Old Jeshwang.  Minimum security, the prisoners sell good eggs and carrots!
