History The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department has been in operation since the founding of the Hospital in the late fifties. Ioannis Konstantinidis was the first Head of the Department, successed by Ioannis Kountouris. Since 1985 Dr. Nicholas Zachariades is Head of the Department. Until the development of the NHS in 1986, our depatment was practically the only organized hospital OMFS department, practicing the entire spectrum of the specialty and covering the needs of patients from all over Greece. The scientific work of the Department is well known in Greece and abroad by the large number of papers published in Greek and international medical journals. Our papers are highly regarded internationally, especially in the fields of Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Maxillofacial Trauma. This is reflected in hundreds of citations referring to our publications. Our library is well updated and one of the best in the country regarding OMFS, with a large number of books and journals of our specialty.
