Week 33- Y3(Oct 21st to Oct 27th)
Sunday:Concert with Ted day! Soundcheck was a little hectic, but the actual concert went extremely well! It's sonice having musicians visit-- fresh perspectives onplaying and new attitudes. People in Korea get reallystuck on what they think jazz should sound like, andit's great having players come from overseas toprovide a more modern and free sound. I only wish itwere more often!Anyway, I was also happy to see that quite a few of mystudents and friends were in the audience, and I evenreceived a bouquet of flowers (albeit, a slightlytacky glittery bouquet) from one of my students. Afterwards we went for some galbi, samgyeopsal andsoju, and I brought Garan along with me for the ride. Actually, usually bringing someone outside of theschool would be kind of a faux-pas, but Garan isreally really trying to get out of teaching Englishand into teaching music. So I wanted him to talk toChang Hyun about where he can get a bass teaching job.Turns out that Garan and Chang Hyun had the sameteacher when they both studied at Indiana, so they gotalong well, and it looks like Chang Hyun might be ableto help Garan get a job! Mission halfwayaccomplished! Of course, it would be really awesomeif he could get a job at my school, but we're a littleheavy on the bass players already . . .The hang/drink-up continued quite late, and it waskind of funny, cause usually with work stuff, I'm theone who crashes first (being the only girl and all),but tonight it was Ted, Kenji, Garan and I as the lastones standing! Ted is tough as nails, and I'm totallyimpressed with how he's handling the jet lag.
Monday:Today was my day to play tour guide to Ted. Like Isaid, I had been worried about it before, but itturned out to be a great day. We met at the Starbucksclose to his hotel around noon, and from there, I tookTed to Gyeongbokgung, the main palace. He loved itand took loads of pictures! We also got quite a bitof attention from the school groups who were comingin-- they were all chasing us around trying to findout where we were from! (Fortunately Ted found thiscute instead of annoying . . .) After the palace, Itook Ted to the Insadong neighbourhood, where we had abibimbap lunch and did some shopping and wanderingaround. Then, back in the south part of the city, wefound this bar called Oktoberfest that was having somekind of special on beer: all you can drink for 10bucks! Can't complain about that . . . (by the way,the school gives me money for this kind of thing. Ijust have to save all the receipts to prove that Iactually used the money on Ted) We then spent therest of the evening shooting the sh*t about anythingand everything, including Joni Mitchell, Bjork, rockstars, and marriage! Ted=awesome! That said, afterlast night's craziness, we were both ready to call ita night around 10pm. All in all, unexpectedly coolday!
Tuesday:I think I need to institute significantly tougherpolicies on my private students-- I had 2 last minutecancellations today, which really pissed me off, because I could have totally re-arranged my day if Ihad been given more notice. It may be okay to do thiskind of stuff in Korean culture, but my time isvaluable, damn it! I may be dropping a particularstudent soon if this continues . . .At salsa tonight, I was pretty tired and feeling alittle weird for having missed a class on Saturday. Apparently, Helen is intending to use Andy and I torepresent the studio, not just in this firstperformance, but potentially for more performancesaround the city! Good god, who knew that this wasgoing to end up being such a time commitment?!
Wednesday:Teaching all day, and then late rehearsal with BambooWife-- we have a gig at Haebangchon Fest on Saturdayand we are so not ready at all! I don't want to playin a group that's going to embarrass me . . . It'skind of difficult, because Garan and I both come fromreally professional musical backgrounds, and the waywe work/run rehearsals is very different from theother 2 members of the band (both of whom really needto invest in a metronome . . .)
Thursday:I'm totally crashing! I feel like I haven't slept ina month (which is maybe not that far off) and not evencoffee is keeping me up now. I really really need aday off . . . but, alas, more rehearsals with BambooWife after coming back from a full day of teaching inIksan.
Saturday:So today was the first Bamboo Wife gig, and it went .. . okay. There were certainly some time problems, but most audiences don't hear this stuff anyway. Iwas kind of embarrassed that 2 of my students camethough-- I like to compartmentalize my life, not haveit overlap! And there was a really stupid situationthat ended up cutting our set short. The owner of thebar had this "comedian" friend he had promised 15minutes of stage time to. Unfortunately that timeended up coming out of our set. Lame! Why can'tpeople be more professional about this kind of stuff? Plus, the comedian really really sucked ass. After our set (and bad comedy), Garan's other band,St. John the Gambler played a set that was prettycool, and we all proceeded to have a big night, involving a stopover in Hongdae, and lots of bondingtime with Garan while commiserating over our band.Fortunately, I get a little bit of a break tomorrow,so I can be as crazy as I want tonight! Yes!
