Sunday:Potential problem with Bamboo Wife? We were set toplay Haebangchon Festival in a couple of weeks, and wewere going to add some extra rehearsals to tighten upa little. However, our keyboard player is MIA rightnow, and we're worried that he's flaking out on us . .. we need a new keys player stat! |

Wednesday:This was the first of about two weeks worth of reallyreally really long days. I taught all day, then had aevening jazz choir rehearsal, followed by me runningto a Bamboo Wife rehearsal (which had to be changed totonight, because I can't do any other night for thenext week! Arrgh!) I'm really really hoping that mychoirs will be okay for their school concert startingtomorrow . . . |

Thursday:Tonight was the 1st of 2 school concerts. That meansrehearsing and soundchecking all day, and lots ofstressful moments. Today (as with last year), the bigproblem was with the soundboard/soundguy. I haveabout 20 people in each choir, and apparently therearen't enough channels on the board to accomodate thatmany people. I had already talked to Jae and OakYoung about it, and suggested that they share 2 peopleto a mic. The soundguy apparently thought it would bebetter just to plop 4 mics in front of them and hopethat it worked out. It didn't. I'm kind of pissedthat every year, my choir's hard work is diminished bythe lack of capability on the part of the sound guy. Grr! However, my students were okay (not as fabulousas I wanted) despite the sound problems. The concertunfortunately was the longest thing EVER, and I couldnot wait for it to be over!I ended up taking the subway home with a few of mystudents, which was very sweet. I especially love myfirst year students in Iksan. |

Friday:So, I was complaining last week about having to giveup my "Burn the Floor" dance show tickets for thestupid student concert . . . turns out Jae has a gigin Busan, and won't be around to call me on not goingto the concert! Yes-uh! (I did run it by Ben aswell, just in case; and he said that if I had boughtthe tickets before they changed the concert date, thenI should use it) So I came to school to warm up mychoirs and teach my privates, and then I rushed overto Sejong Performing Arts Centre on the other side ofSeoul to catch a show with some of the other dancestudio members. Funny enough, Annabelle is kind ofhaving a rough week too: apparently the tv showmis-edited something she said to make it sound likeshe was claiming that the other teachers at her schoolbeat the students-- as can be expected, this didn't goover well with anyone . . . this tv show seems to beway more trouble than it's worth for Annabelle!Anyway, the show was really good, and it's importantfor me to watch good dancing in order to study for myupcoming performance (Dec. 15th!) |

Saturday:So Ted Quinlan, head of the jazz guitar faculty atHumber College arrived very late last night for hisweek in Seoul. Never having met Ted before, I was alittle worried leading up to hiim being here. It's alot of responsibility taking care of a guest to ourschool, and the reputation of PaekChe really dependson him being happy! Today we had a rehearsal for the concert tomorrownight, and it was great! Ted is an incrediblypositive, energetic person, and a really refreshingplayer. I was totally into the tunes and ideas hebrought with him (although slightly nervous abouthaving to sightread!) and he really liked myarrangements and tunes and my singing. So now I'm notnervous at all, just excited about tomorrow. Afterrehearsal, we went to O'Kims (yeah, cheesy name, Iknow) for a snack and some drinks. Not only is Tedawesome in rehearsals (especially for someone who'scompletely jetlagged!), but he's a really good hang--really funny and hyper and easy going, with lots ofgreat stories. It made me miss Toronto . . .Afterwards, I was supposed to go to salsa class, but Ifelt that my time might be better spent tonight justchilling out and working on some music stuff. |
