Monday Aug 15th, We had a holiday today, because it's the 60th anniversary of Korea's freedom from Japan. Today was also Katie's last day in Korea, as she flies back to Wales tomorrow AM. We're all pretty upset that Katie's going, cause she's kind of like a fixture in our social life. It sucks that the reality of friendships here is so transitional. I'd like to think that I'll stay in touch with everyone that I meet here, but I know realistically that I'll be lucky if I hold onto a few people. I know that Jason and Evan and I will all be hanging out in TO, but beyond them, who knows? In any case, tonight was another wild party night at Itaewon (a bar downtown). A lot of people came out for Katie, and we partied til the wee hours of the morning, ignoring the fact that most of us had to be at work really early the next morning. It was definitly worth it. |

Thursday Aug 18th, This has been a busy week of getting ready for our gig at Commune on Saturday. We're trying to learn a bunch
of new tunes, but as per usual, relations with Mike are causing quite a bit of complication. Mike has been bailing on practise every day for a week now, which in itself is really annoying since he needs the practise the most. But then tonight, he showed up with all these new songs that he had printed off lyrics for us to learn, in utter disregard of the work that we had already put in to learn new songs (and pick them together for that matter). Mike hadn't even transcribed them properly, so we agreed to one of them to be nice, but put our proverbial foot down for the other 4 songs that Mike was insisting on doing. This led to some tension. It should be an interesting show in any case-- I suppose every ensemble needs some source of conflict.

Saturday Aug 20th, Today was gig day, as well as our friend Shelley's birthday and Jason's girlfriend Steph's birthday. So we set everything up and then headed over to Ariana Brau, which is a brewery in the south end of Daegu that has an all-you-can eat and drink buffet on Saturday nights for two birthday celebrations. The place was great, and the food looked delicious, but unfortunately, I couldn't really indulge too much on the eating and drinking before a gig. However, the two birthday celebrations continued at our gig, which was nice. Commune was packed way beyond capacity, filled with already very drunk people. This made for kind of a difficult gig,
because a)no one was really listening to us and b)people kept on knocking into us. So I didn't have a lot of fun playing this time. Plus I'm really starting to miss doing jazz, or at the least doing music that challenges me a little more mentally. I feel like while I'm singing a lot, my brain isn't working very hard, and I'm not getting to be very creative. In any case, we made up for the kind of crappiness of
the gig by taking advantage of the free beer that came with the gig. Our night ended at Bubble (the dance club), once againdancing until 6am. I met a guy named Richard, who is from Halifax. We had a Korean breakfast of meat soup, where we met some crazy Korean guys who wanted us to pose for an excessive amount of pictures (there's at least 10 on my camera right now), and I actually made it home to bed at about 10am, beating my record from last week by about 1 hour! Fortunately, I have no plans for Sunday but to sleep, sleep and then maybesleep some more.
