Grey Gazer:
In his youth, Cygnus found a huge crystal, twice as big as a man. (Some said he willed it into existance. He had been recently thrashed by Caitlin and he hated that.) Over the next months, he put his frustration into that glass chunk, thinking of how he never wanted to be beaten like that again. When he was done he had created an ideal form of defense: a crystal shield of dark grey smoke, three foot in diameter with an arm strap hollowed out, resistant to the fiercest blows.
Journal:
Cygnus's crest is embossed on the dark grey cover. The binding and the corners are reinforced with black leather. A white ribbon mark's the place he will begin reading next.

Military Commander of Ember:
Influences and directs the Admiral of Ember's Navy and the General of Ember's Army. Can not directly control each personage but the consequences for not doing as requested can fall heavily on each, depending on the current Scion and the Family's disposition of course.
ADMIRAL: The Admiral of the Navy also controls the civilian harbor and regulates sea trade, the backbone of Ember's economy. Although not authorized to negotiate contracts, determine trade tariffs or rates of exchange, the Admiral enforces them and controls harbor traffic schedules, docking fees, siezes cargo/ships/crew for monies due or crimes committed, hunts down pirates and sea monsters. The Admiral also plans and executes (on approval) all engagements on water during wartime.
PROS: All of the above. This player controls not only the ships and sailors but also all sea trade and commerce, 63% of Ember's hard cash economy.
CONS: The life of a sailor is a dangerous one. You may die performing your daily chores without the help of your siblings.
GENERAL: The General of the Army recruits, trains and directs all land personnel in peacetime and in war, except for the Isle's Rangers. Due to the contingent of Rangers on the island and the flood plains/marshes on the coast, this position is usually one of distance from the Castle. Army headquarters is located in the Capital City, yet except for the General's winter occupation and rare visits, it is usually minimally staffed. This is a position of high trust and independence. Especially since the Scion's unannounced visits have dwindled since his illness. Traditionally, the General and personal guard ride Ember's distinctive marsh ponies (trained for war).
PROS: Through the physical presence of Ember's Army spread over the mainland, the General actually controls the kingdom.
CONS: Without the cooperation of the Navy and the Rangers, the Army cannot physically reach the Castle proper to lay siege or to conquer.
