Riding the West Coast

The West Coast

From Krabi, we made a first stop in Ao Luk's National Park which we didn't know about at all before arriving. In the end it turned out to be a very nice place for "locals" to hang around the very nice waterfalls and clay cliffs.

We cut through the mountains on the second day, aiming for the beaches of Khao Lak, just North of Phuket.

And allthough we were starting to get used to the exhausting heat and humidity, we needed to stop every hour or two just to cool down and have a fresh drink in a local shop.

It was also the opportunity to check our maps, which we now knew couldn't be taken for granted.
This West coast stretches from Phuket to Ranong, and then becomes part of Burma.

This part of Thailand isn't very touristic, and there were loads of deserted but really nice beaches to be found all the way.

At first we though we might have problems finding accomodation, but in the end there was always nearby bungalows to stay in.
This one, on Hat Praphat beach, was all ours for the night for less than a fiver!

The beach was really nice and quiet ...

... and that's all you need after a (not so) hard day of cycling.

As we realised no map could lead us through small local roads, we had to stick to the main Phuket to Ranong road. Which wasn't so bad in the end, as there wasn't that much traffic at all. On the contrary, there was just loads of scooters, a few pick ups and local buses, and the odd air con tourist coach.
And above all, very wide roads with a lane for bikes and scooters ... which was nice.
