From home to Reading, England
(part 1 of 8)
We rode through the channel tunnel in our car on a train.  How cool is that!
Our first stop was in Canterbury where we spent a few hours before continuing on to Reading.  We had hoped to see the famed Canterbury Cathederal, but you couldn't see much from the outside without paying an entry fee that allowed you to pass through a courtyard gate.  Unfortunately we didn't have the time to make the investment.  Below is the pub where we ate a traditional English lunch.

READING
For our first week in Britain we stayed in the cottage below left.  It was on the grounds of Mapledurham, a country estate.  We were 5 miles from the city of Reading.  Below right is an old mill that was on the grounds.
Around Reading were several community parks.  Below left is a swimming hole that Karen and the kids found one day.  In the British countryside are a lot of one lane roads with occassional pulloff space to allow for passing.  Unfortunately we stayed on one of these roads.  It was definitely a challenge to drive the van on it. The biggest challenge actually was getting out of the narrow, steep driveway each day!
