Elections Coming in June
Do you like (or dislike) the way that ISCA's been run this year? Would
you like to see ISCA get involved in a new issue, or would you like to
be more involved with local issues on behalf of your neighborhood? Maybe
you'd simply like to meet more of your neighbors and enjoy the sense of
community we feel in the neighborhood. Well, here's your chance!
It's time again to put out the call for those neighbors who want to
get more involved with their neighborhood association. ISCA elections will
be held during June's meeting, so now is the time to start considering
whether you'd like to nominate someone for a position or volunteer for
a job. Most positions require only a few hours a month of time and provide
a real opportunity to get involved with several local issues.
There are six elected officers who will be voted on in June, as well
as several other committees and positions that can provide an excellent
opportunity to get one's feet wet.
Among the positions to be filled are:
-
President:
-
sets the general meeting agenda and runs the meetings, writes and speaks
on behalf of ISCA to local, county and state representatives about local
issues
-
Vice President for Civic and Legal Affairs:
-
officer responsible for keeping up with local governmental issues such
as traffic studies, Silver Spring redevelopment, zoning issues. In lieu
of President, this officer may represent ISCA at the President's Council,
Allied Civic Association or other "umbrella" civic associations
-
Vice President for Neighborhood Pride:
-
officer in charge of ISCA social activities, neighborhood beautification,
and other neighborhood quality of life issues. Generally, this officer
will chair a social committee that will assist them in planning the different
activities for the year
-
Vice President for Communications:
-
officer responsible for the publication and distribution of the newsletter
and (in the future) web site. All officers (and others) write articles
for the newsletter, but this officer makes sure the newsletter is laid
out, printed, copied and distributed. Generally, this officer will have
a small committee to assist in this effort, as well as (potentially) a
separate web designer to produce an ISCA web site
-
Recording Secretary:
-
takes minutes of ISCA meetings and maintains an archive of ISCA correspondance
if necessary
-
Treasurer:
-
maintains ISCA's checking account, collects membership dues and maintains
list of active membership

In addition to these officers, there are three other positions that
need to be filled on an annual basis:
-
Neighbohood Watch coordinator:
-
ISCA liason to Montgomery County Police, as well as the top of the phone
chain. Maintains list of block captains and recruits new captains as needed
to fill gaps. Keeps engravers and other Neighborhood Watch/safety related
materials.
-
Long Branch Neighborhood Initiative representative:
-
represents ISCA at LBNI meetings and keeps ISCA abreast of issues in the
Long Branch community
-
Montgomery County Schools liason:
-
keeps abreast of issues dealing with the local schools, including the reopening
of Northwood and possible boundary issues. Also keeps up with local school
events like the Blair Fair, silent auctions, open houses, etc.
