Samurai were the noblemen warriors who ruled Japan throughout the Middle Ages, a class of warriors similar to the medieval knights of Europe. Their influence was greatest between the 9th and the 16th century (Heian Period), during internal military disputes. In the 17th century Japan united, and the Ryukyu Islands were annexed. This was followed by peaceful years that saw the decay of the political power of the islands. Later, the contact with the western world made things even worse – finally in 1876 (Meiji Period), the permission to carry swords, along with other traditions, was completely abolished.

Bushido is a japanese word resulting from the fusion of "bushi" (samurai) + "do" (way). It was the code of conduct of the samurai, and was later transferred to all martial arts.
