What do we want to learn?

We want to learn about the history, culture and environment of early Filipinos through archaeology.

Where will we excavate?

We will excavate the ruins of the original Taal Church in Barangay Poblacion in what is now San Nicolas, Batangas.  It lies beside Taal Lake, about a half-hour banca ride from the Volcano.  We will also excavate related archaeological sites adjacent to the church ruins and look for new sites along the virtually unexplored Pansipit River nearby.

What’s so special about this site?

The site is special because it contains the remains of the first Taal Church from where the friar-led government of Batangas Province was governed in the early Spanish period.  It is also believed to have been settled by Filipino communities in the Prehistoric era.  The church and town were destroyed in the great volcanic eruption of 1754, and the town of Taal was relocated by the Spaniards to its present site at a higher, safer area.  Little is known about the first Taal town and even less is known about the Filipinos that settled there prior to the arrival of the Spaniards.

What do we expect to learn?

We want to excavate and document the ruins of the Old Church and its immediate surroundings in order to learn more about early Spanish settlement patterns and architecture.  We also want to unearth artifacts and ecofacts dating to the Prehistoric period that can shed light on the ways of life of early Filipino communities.  We hope that through this research project, we can contribute not only to the cultural development of San Nicolas but also to its economic development via tourism.

Who can join the excavation?

Anybody who is interested in archaeology and is in good physical condition.

Who will lead the excavation?

The excavation will be conducted by a team of professional archaeologists from the National Museum of the Philippines, University of the Philippines - Archaeological Studies Program and KAPI to be led by its President, Dr. Eusebio Z. Dizon.
