Dragonlance

Raistlin Majere

"So dark. Endless darkness, eternal. It was not the absence of light that was so frightening as the absence of thought, of knowledge, of comprehension. Our lives, the lives of the living will go on. The sun shines, the moons rise, we will laugh and talk, and he will know nothing, feel nothing. Nothing. So final. It will come to us all. It will come to me."

"I like the feeling of magic inside me. And someday fat innkeepers will bow to me."

"I will do this. Nothing in my life matters except this. No moment of my life exists except this moment. I am born in this moment, and if I fail, I will die in this moment."

"Farewell, Revered Daughter. I need you no longer."

"There is a difference between wisdom and intelligence, my brother. A person may have one without the other."

"Death is life's one great certainty."

"All my life, I was my own person. The choices I made, I made of my own free will. I was never held in thrall by anyone or anything; not even the Queen of Darkness herself! Bow to others in reverence and respect, but never in slavery!"

"I don't need you! I don't want you around! Go ahead! Play with those fools! You're all a pack of fools together! I don't need any of you!"

"You never did understand me, Caramon."

"Haven't you learned yet? I know! Put it at that. I paid for my knowledge in the Towers of High Sorcery. I paid for it with my body and very nearly my reason..."

"I have dreamed of it...for so long... We will go home, Nephew. I want to go home."

"The half-elf comes to me for advice, not because I can see the future. I can't. I am no seer. He comes because I am able to think, which is something most of these other fools seem incapable of doing."

"...I break the silence now because I want the facts known. If I am to be judged by those who come after me, let me be judged by the truth."

"I made love to a beautiful woman and I didn't know it. Just my luck."

"I killed him once, Tanis, I can do it again!"

"They're ignorant."

"Without the magic, there could be no future."

"You are wise, Caramon. Did you know that?"

"I will be an accommodating guest, I assure you! I will not set the bed linens on fire, nor will I poison the well."

"Nothing is the matter, my brother! Nothing in the world is the matter! For once, everything is right."

"I know what you're saying, and, yes, there have been times when I would have been glad to see my brother engulfed in flames..." [Antimodes, speaking of Raistlin's disastrous Test]

"If you even so much as look at my spellbooks sideways, I will turn you into a cricket and swallow you whole!"

"Farewell, my friends... And a long farewell it will be. Some of us are not destined to meet again in this world!"

"Someday you - with all your strength and charm and good looks - you - all of you, will call me master!"

"No one hears you...crying in the night, alone..."

"Would you? Would you go with me into darkness? ...I truly believe you would."

"I see my appearance startles you."

"I used her. What of the way she used me? We were two of a kind, just clad in different color clothes."

"I wanted to tell her that sometimes, in my long sleep, I dreamt of her."

"No, my brother, where I go, you can not follow. Strong as you are, it would lead you to your death. We are finally as the gods meant us to be, Caramon- two whole people, and here our paths separate. You must learn to walk yours alone- or with those who might choose to walk it with you. Farewell, my brother."

Hope is the denial of reality. It is the carrot dangled before the draft horse to keep him plowing along in a vain attempt to reach it.

"Bow only in reverence, never in subservience."

"The dark crimes which stain my soul, brother, you cannot begin to imagine. If you knew, you would turn from me in horror and loathing. And, you are right. Sometimes in the night, even I turn from myself. But know this, I committed those crimes intentionally, willingly. Know this too--there are darker crimes before me, and I will commit them, intentionally, willingly... She will enter the Abyss with me. She will go before me and fight my battles. She will face dark priests, dark mages, spirits of the dead doomed to wander in that cursed land, plus the unbelievable torments that my Queen can devise. All these will wound her in body, devour her mind, and shred her soul. Finally, when she can endure no more, she will slump to the ground to lie at my feet...bleeding, wretched, dying. She will, with her last strength, hold out her hand to me for comfort. She will not ask me to save her. She is too strong for that. She will give her life for me willingly, gladly. All she will ask is that I stay with her as she dies. But I will walk past her. I will walk past her without a look, without a word. Why? Because I will no longer need her. I will continue to walk forward to my goal, and my strength will grow even as the blood flows from her pierced heart."

"I have sinned enough against the world...Teaching magic to a kender would ensure my damnation."

Something touched him... a hand.... He clutched at it as it shook him, gently. A voice called, "Raist! Wake up! It was only a dream. Don't be afraid. I won't let them hurt you! Here, watch...I'll make you laugh." A strong arm encircled him, holding him close. A hand raised, gleaming with silver light, forming childish pictures in the night, and the voice, dimly heard, whispered, "Look, Raist, bunnies..."

"In his heart Sturm was a knight. He had better claim to that false title than many who held it for truth. Sturm Brightblade obeyed laws that no one enforced. He lived by a noble code in which no one else believed. He swore an oath that no one heard. Only himself... and his god. No one would have held him to that oath, to the measure. He did that himself. He knew himself."

Raistlin stepped forward. He laid his hand on her head. If I have any power at all, Great One, he said inside himself, power that has not yet been revelaed to me, grant that this little one goes through her life in safety and happiness.

Farewell, Bupu, he said softly.

Tasslehoff Burrfoot

"Still, we have to keep trying and hoping. That's what's important - the trying and the hoping. Maybe that's most important of all"

"We are the spirits of the poor souls Flint Fireforge left on the barroom floor. Did we die in combat? No! We died of shame, cursed by the ghost of the grape for not being able to out drink a hill dwarf."

"Out of my way, you soul-sucking scum! Leave now, lest I unleash the lethal power of my ancestor's tableware! Leave now, lest I use this spoon [The 'Kender Spoon of Turning'] to scoop out your shadowy innards!"

Caramon Majere

"I dont understand, Raist"

"I don't want to fight evil. I just want to go home. Is that too much to ask?"

Fizban

"Arrest the tree! Obstructing sunlight! That's the charge!"

Margaret Weiss (co-author)

"No human in full possession of his sanity, who wanted to keep a firm hold on such sanity, would ever willingly associate with a kender."
