The Zonal Level competition of Math Kangaroo Contest is scheduled for 7th September 2006 and all preparations have been completed for this. Question papers have been printed and sealed and teams for administering the contest also have been formed and briefed about. It is expected that at least about 150 children will be participating in each Zone and altogether there are five such zones. Once the Zonal competitions are over; students from each zone (20 each from Class 8th and Class 9th) will be selected to participate in the State Level competitions, which is scheduled for 19th September 2006. The Executive Committee of PSF met on the 2nd September 2006 discussed the programme in detail under the Chairpersonship of Dr.P.Jambulingam, President of Pondicherry Science Forum and has approved it . |

There was one unfortunate incident in Pondicherry which was that just before the day of the Math Kangaroo, a haux bomb scare forced the government to declare holiday on the day before the contests and we had a smaller participation than expected for the Math Kangaroo contest. | I have had no university education but I have undergone the ordinary school course. After leaving school I have been employing the spare time at my disposal to work at mathematics. I have not trodden through the conventional regular course which is followed in a university course, but I am striking out a new path for myself. I have made a special investigation of divergent series in general and the results I get are termed by the local mathematicians as 'startling'. I have found a friend in you who views my labours sympathetically. ... I am already a half starving man. To preserve my brains I want food and this is my first consideration. | Zonal-level Maths Kangaroo held in Pondy

PONDICHERRY: To inculcate a love for maths among schoolchildren, the Department of Education and Pondicherry Science Forum are jointly organising Maths Kangaroo contests in Pondicherry. The zonal-level contest was held on Thursday in five schools, and over 260 students from both government and private schools participated. The children, who were from Standards VIII and IX, were given a multiple choice question paper and told to tick the right solutions to the problems by working them out mentally. Hemavathy, headmistress of Government Girls Middle School, Veeraveli, and convenor of the Maths Kangaroo in Pondicherry, said test toppers from these 260 children would participate in the State-level contest that would be held on 19 September. "Those who are selected in that contest will be given training in the weekends from October and would be representing Pondicherry in the Math Olympiad finals in India." Professor Santharuben initiated the idea of a Maths Kangaroo from Paris 11 University. R. Sridharan, teacher, Government High School, Abisegapakkam, said that learning mathematics was mental gymnastics. It makes children understand the subject in a better and easier manner. "They learn to find the correct solutions to problems on their own." Murugan of Pondicherry Science Forum said that the children were given printouts of last year's question papers as a model as an introduction to the contest. The children were also given travelling allowances. |
